Job description

Position Overview

Reporting to the Director of Strategic Opportunities & General Counsel, the Senior Manager, Strategic Opportunities provides leadership and expertise in developing new policy ideas and research responsive to the needs and priorities of First Nation clients.

The role is accountable for the daily management of the Strategic Opportunities ("SO") team, ensuring projects adhere to standards set by the CEO, Senior Management Team, and FMB’s Board of Directors. It also involves supporting the development of internal policies and procedures to enhance operational efficiency and quality control.

Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership
  • Supervise and manage the work of direct reports.
  • Evaluate staff performance in collaboration with the Director and other Senior Managers.
  • Enhance staff performance through effective management, training, and professional development.
  • Assist in preparing materials for executive meetings and contribute to strategic planning, budgeting, and policy improvement.
  • Maintain organized documentation and participate in special projects.
  • Support continuous improvement of governance policies, procedures, and tools.
  • Support policy development and strategic positioning with policymakers and influencers.

  • Identify prospective partnerships and cultivate relationships with organizations, institutions, and key stakeholders.
  • Benchmarks/Policy
  • Maintain and improve governance benchmarks, policies, and procedures.
  • Support the certification review and approval process.
  • Lead initiatives to position FMB and clients strategically with policymakers, responding proactively to legislative and administrative changes in line with good governance and UNDRIP principles.
  • Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in relevant fields; graduate degree is an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in governance, Indigenous organizations, or related fields.
  • Experience working with First Nations governance structures and federal or provincial governments.
  • At least 2 years in a policy-making environment, with strong research and evaluation skills.
  • Fluency in English; French is an asset.

Working Conditions

  • Based in West Vancouver, Winnipeg, Montreal, or Ottawa; remote work may be considered.
  • Requires national travel and occasional evening/weekend work.
