The Role

The Senior Manager, Governance & Process Optimization (G&PO) is a key contributor to the success of the Governance team in Global Risk Management (GRM). By supporting Governance functions and projects, they ensure all Risk activities are conducted in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures. The senior manager will liaise with stakeholders in International Banking and therefore Spanish will be a strong asset.

The G&PO Senior Manager has a sound knowledge of the Bank’s products and lending policies, combined with a good understanding of the Bank’s credit culture and bank regulations. The Senior Manager is expected to work both individually and within a team, taking initiative and aiding as required to meet the team’s overall objectives. The Senior Manager’s mandate will focus on process improvement of Governance processes in GRM.

What will you do?

The responsibilities will vary, and major accountabilities can evolve, depending on the Bank’s and the Governance team’s priorities. This role offers variety and exposure as the Governance team is collaborative and has a broad mandate. The Senior Manager, G&PO will need to regularly use their skills in written/oral communication, Excel, SharePoint, and Power BI. Due to engagement with our International Banking stakeholders, fluent Spanish will be a strong asset.

Support GRM And Governance

  • Participate and lead various projects as they arise within Governance.
  • Change management stakeholders by reinforcing new processes and procedures through training, quality assurance checks, and follow-ups.
  • Create, update, and ensure the quality of Power BI and Excel reports, Credit Risk Proposals, SharePoint content, and other Governance forms for compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Lead by example in all employee communications and engage in relationship management with stakeholders as we work towards a culture of stronger governance.
  • Follow up with stakeholders to enforce adherence to policies or to provide second line challenge to their processes.
  • Offer counsel on policies and procedures.
  • Help maintain Governance documents and sites that require regular updates.
  • Maintain regular reporting through excel and Power BI to monitor adherence to policy. Complete ad-hoc reviews and reporting requests.

Improve Governance Processes

  • Collaborate with analytics or technology teams to enhance automated processes, data accuracy and reporting requirements. Identify and assess root causes of weak Governance controls and quantify their impact.
  • Formulate recommendations for policy or process enhancements and/or corrective actions, keeping in mind the Bank’s customers, to address gaps against policy or user experience.
  • Participate in presentations of findings with stakeholders and help negotiate action plans and resolution dates with them, supported by your analysis to quantify the impact of the gap/trend.
  • Participate in stakeholder meetings to gather requirements, devise solutions, and communicate plans and status updates through PowerPoint decks.
  • Implement process improvements by managing SharePoint site content, document libraries, and lists, and write new content or communications related to process.
  • Assist in training sessions for GRM stakeholders as a Governance representative
  • Maintain access and updates of sites and documents within the Governance digital footprint

What do you need to succeed?

  • A University degree in Business, Statistics or Accounting is required. A minimum of five or more years of progressive, relevant and practical experience with world class organizations, preferably with financial institutions, in credit / lending functions, and a proven track record of success in informed decision-making.
  • Professional fluency in English; fluency in Spanish will be a strong asset;
  • Expert usage of Microsoft office tools, particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Power BI;
  • Knowledge of SharePoint functions and permission administration is an asset;
  • High level of proficiency in critical thinking and problem solving;
  • Lean Six Sigma knowledge is an asset;
  • Basic understanding of the lending processes and the 5 C’s of credit;
  • A strong understanding of the Bank’s delivery channels, centralized processing units and knowledge of various bank adjudication platforms
  • The Manager must be extremely detail-oriented, considering both quantitative and qualitative review objectives;
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written;
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and the financial industry in Canada and other countries where Scotiabank operates;
  • Thorough understanding of the Bank’s three lines of defense;
