A leading company in the automotive industry is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the development of advanced test automation frameworks. This hybrid role involves collaborating with various teams to ensure high-quality software through effective testing strategies. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in software development, technical leadership skills, and a passion for driving quality in testing processes.
GM is developing the next generation of embedded platform software to deliver state-of-the-art features to our customers. To achieve that goal, our testing processes, tools, and infrastructure need to evolve. We are looking for energetic engineers to deliver high quality test tools and infrastructure to ensure the correctness of our software.
The AV Sensing Software team is responsible for the software that configures devices like lidars, cameras, radars, and IMUs and delivers sensor data to the AV stack running on GM vehicles.
This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to ensure the delivery of robust, scalable, and high-performance software. We are looking for a hands-on technical leaderto dive deep into our software, write code to create and extend test frameworks, create tools to aid in software verification,define test strategies,and implement new processes to streamline our quality.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will take input from various customer teams and bring their need for automated testing to life. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with different business units throughout GM and pursue technical and leadership growth.
Technical Leadership & Strategy
Lead the design, development, and implementation of advanced test automation frameworks, tools, and infrastructure.
Define and drive the overall test strategy for complex features and end-to-end systems, ensuring comprehensive test coverage.
Evaluate and recommend new technologies, tools, and best practices to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our testing processes.
Contribute significantly to the architectural design and review of new features and systems from a testability, reliability, and performance perspective.
Drive a culture of quality throughout the development lifecycle, advocating for shift-left testing principles.
Hands-on Development & Automation:
Develop and maintain robust, scalable, and maintainable automated tests (unit, integration, API, performance, security) using various programming languages (e.g., C++, Rust, Go, Python).
Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines, ensuring continuous feedback and early detection of issues.
Develop and maintain test data management strategies and tools.
Perform complex debugging and root cause analysis of software defects.
Implement advanced monitoring and alerting for production systems to identify and proactively address quality issues.
Collaboration & Mentorship:
Work closely with software engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to understand requirements, design robust test plans, and ensure high-quality deliverables.
Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level SDETs, fostering their growth and development.
Lead code reviews for test automation scripts and frameworks, ensuring adherence to coding standards and best practices.
Champion best practices in software development, testing, and quality assurance across the engineering organization.
Problem Solving & Innovation:
Anticipate potential quality issues and proactively implement preventative measures.
Drive continuous improvement in testing methodologies, tools, and processes.
Identify and implement creative solutions to complex testing challenges.
Participate in on-call rotations as needed to support production systems.
Additional Job Description:
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Experience: 8+ years of progressive experience as a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) or a similar role, with at least 2-3 years in technical leadership or staff-level capacity.
10+ years of experience developing in multiple programming languages such as C/C++, Rust, Python, Go, Java, Groovy, etc.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
Test Automation Frameworks: Deep experience designing, building, and maintaining robust test automation frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, Rest Assured, Pytest, JUnit, NUnit, TestNG).
CI/CD & DevOps: Strong understanding and hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Actions, BuildKite, Azure DevOps) and integrating automated tests into the pipeline.
Version Control: Strong experience with Git and collaborative development workflows.
Problem-Solving: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives, mentor junior engineers, and drive consensus across teams.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
Understanding of Vehicle Electrical Architecture and common automotive software design practices.
Advanced degree in engineering or management/leadership.
Experience using and development on open-source automation frameworks such as Robot.
5+ years of experience in Automotive SW Test or Development, including experience with test automation and test or software architecture.
Experience with build systems such as Bazel, or alternatives like CMake or Meson.
Familiarity with embedded Linux build systems such as Buildroot or Yocto.
Experience working with sensor technologies, particularly automotive grade (cameras, lidars, radars, IMUs)
