Title: Senior Manager, Managed Asset Program

Purpose

Contributes to the overall success of the Managed Portfolio Program / Investment & Advisory Solutions / Scotia Wealth Management in Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

Accountabilities

  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Lead the oversight of ScotiaMcLeod’s Managed Portfolio Program (MPP) by:
    • Identifying and developing new initiatives to support Portfolio Managers in the growing their MPP business.
    • Leading the implementation and rollout of program initiatives.
    • Participating in the Managed Accounts Operating Committee.
  • Investigate and implement changes to MPP by:
    • Leading the effective implementation of technology upgrades, new policies and procedures, improved administrative flows, new program features and portfolio management enhancements.
  • Provide ongoing training to the business line on all issues surrounding portfolio management by:
    • Developing, implementing, and presenting educational and training programs for new and experienced WAs and PMs including research, portfolio construction, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Provide support to business line investment professionals by:
    • Proactively coaching highly experienced, demanding investment professionals on program best practices.
    • Acting as mentor for more junior investment team members requiring ongoing coaching regarding portfolio management.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to the Managed Portfolio Program team by:
    • Ensuring the oversight of the investment activities of more than 400 Associate Portfolio Managers (APM) and Portfolio Managers (PM).
    • Ensuring that PMs manage accounts within the parameters of the program, Investment Policy Statement and IIROC regulations.
    • Ensuring that all accounts are reviewed on a quarterly basis for suitability of investments, appropriate investment strategy, security selection, diversification parameters, performance against Investment Policy Statement and markets.
    • Ensuring the group has a complete policies and procedures manual that is maintained and properly reflects CIRO Regulations.
    • Ensuring the development of reports and tools necessary to monitor accounts.
    • Ensuring the maintenance of proper records of reviews, escalations, and discipline process.
  • Provide strong team leadership to motivate and develop individual and team performance by:
    • Fostering and developing a strong, positive team environment to drive a high degree of engagement.
    • Regularly scheduling one-on-one coaching with direct reports.
    • Identifying and supporting training and developmental needs of team members.
    • Managing staffing requirements and departmental workloads.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Education / Experience / Other Information

  • University degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
  • CFA designation or equivalent education would be an asset.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of capital markets, portfolio management, provincial and national securities regulations, mutual funds and the mutual fund industry.
  • 5 years relevant experience in mutual fund, investment management or brokerage industry.
  • Highly developed PC skills and comfort with relevant industry software (MPower, Bloomberg, Mellon, Zephyr, Morningstar Direct, MS Excel, etc.)
  • Significant comfort with and expertise in research methods and statistical analysis.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a dynamic, fast paced, demanding environment.
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong ability to build and maintain key internal and external relationships.
