Duties and Responsibilities
  • Corporate fleet management, ensuring the efficient and cost‑effective acquisition, maintenance, repair and refurbishment of vehicles and special equipment.
  • Ensures budget control and monitoring as well as implementation of innovative methods of improving productivity.
  • Plans, directs and coordinates the activities of the Fleet Division, including budgetary and personnel matters.
  • Ensures, through the supervisors and other assigned staff, that an appropriate fleet management plan is formulated and carried out.
  • Investigates, develops, implements productivity and service enhancement strategies.
  • Oversees work activities undertaken by both corporate staff and contractors; ensures facilities and equipment are maintained to appropriate standards and keeps appropriate records for integrity.
  • Researches and prepares reports and correspondence.
  • Directly communicates with municipal officials, representatives of other agencies and the public.
  • Manages staff, including recruitment, discipline, WSIB, Health & Safety, lost‑time and performance reviews, and training and development within various facilities and collective agreements.
  • Ensures staff familiarity with federal/provincial safety legislation and corporate safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintains amiable relations with our customers, the public and fellow staff; replaces other managers as necessary.
  • Performs occupational health and safety duties as outlined in the corporation’s Health and Safety Program.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Business or related field, or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency, and a minimum of four (4) years’ experience in an operations/technical environment.
  • OR University Degree in Engineering or Business or related field, or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency, and a minimum of six (6) years’ experience in an operations/technical environment.
  • OR post‑secondary Community College diploma in Engineering or Business or related field, or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency, and over ten (10) years’ experience in an operations/technical environment.
  • Ability to travel to offsite locations in a timely and expedient manner; if travel is by vehicle, a current valid driver’s license is required and a driver’s abstract must be provided.
  • Progressive municipal or related experience in fleet management.
  • Extensive labour/management experience in a union setting.
  • Proven experience in contract administration, budget control and monitoring, and personnel supervision in a computerized and unionized environment.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve complex technical and operational issues.
  • Proven technical communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate safety, labour and construction acts and codes, and other relevant federal and provincial legislation.
  • Certifications such as Truck and Coach Technician, Automotive Service Technician, Auto Body and Collision Damage Repair will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, its regulations and hazards associated with the work.
  • Requirement to complete and remain current in the corporation’s Management Certificate Program.
  • Progression through the Art of Supervision Program Certificate or a similar supervisory program is considered an asset.
  • Required to lift up to 10 lbs.

  • Physical demand analysis indicates a sedentary level of work.
