The Senior Manager, Corporate Accounting is responsible for assisting the Corporate Controller with managing the corporate accounting function of High Liner Foods, including establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures. The Senior Manager works with the Controller to provide accurate information including analysis, budgeting, forecasting and preparing financial reports.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Corporate Accounting Operations
- Manage all aspects of corporate accounting, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial information.
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual consolidation of the Company’s entities.
- Prepare and review journal entries related to the corporate function.
- Prepare and manage intercompany allocations, transactions, eliminations, and related reconciliations and schedules.
- Oversee foreign exchange accounting and the management of accumulated other comprehensive income (AOCI).
- Prepare internally generated financial statements for external bank reporting and internal use.
Equity and Compensation & Benefits Accounting
- Manage accounting for all compensation-related programs, including:
- Short- and long-term incentive plans (including share-based compensation plans such as RSUs, PSUs, DSUs, etc.)
- Pension and retirement benefit plans
- Group medical, dental, and other employee benefit programs
- Manage accounting for all equity transactions, including the company’s NCIB.
SG&A and Commercial Expense Management
- Oversee accounting for company-wide SG&A expenses (excluding Supply Chain), including monthly spend analysis, variance explanations, and reporting for internal stakeholders.
- Manage accounting and reporting of commercial trade and marketing expenses in collaboration with business partners.
Financial Reporting & Close Process
- Prepare cash flow statements and support the preparation of the statement of changes in accumulated other comprehensive income (AOCI).
- Draft and maintain notes to financial statements for areas of responsibility, ensuring compliance with all relevant accounting standards and internal policies.
- Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules and responding to audit inquiries.
- Lead account reconciliations and coordinate quarterly close processes to ensure completion and compliance with internal policies.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Support monthly forecasting and planning activities for corporate and commercial business partners.
- Lead the annual budget process, collaborating with the internal project management team and functional leads.
- Manage intercompany budgeting components and consolidation of budgeted balance sheet and cash flow.
- Drive continuous improvement in the budgeting and forecasting process.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with internal financial policies, procedures, and relevant regulatory requirements.
- Maintain and enhance internal controls over financial reporting and accounting systems.
- Support internal and external audits, and prepare materials for the Audit Committee and Board of Directors, as needed.
Leadership & Strategic Initiatives
- Assist the Corporate Controller in setting priorities for the accounting team.
- Support implementation of new systems and strategic finance projects from an internal control and financial operations perspective.
- Hire, train, mentor, and supervise accounting staff, fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
Other
- Perform other related duties or special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- University degree in Accounting with advanced degree or professional accounting designation.
- Extensive experience and knowledge of all aspects of corporate accounting and financial management.
- Proficient communication, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills are vital to the role.
- Experience overseeing audits performed by external audit firms.
- Financial analysis, budgeting and some strategic planning experience.
- Knowledge of accounting principles, practices and applications.
- Knowledge of budget preparation and analysis techniques.
- Management and or supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of publicly traded companies.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate teams to produce quality work within tight timeframes.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make the necessary decisions to move forward the work at hand.
- Knowledge of ERP computer systems an asset, specifically Enterprise One.
- Ability to adapt to and learn new software.
- Able to work efficiently as a part of a team as well as independently.
- High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts.
- Able to work well under pressure and meet set deadlines.
- Attention to detail in all areas of work.
