Senior Mainframe Developer (COBOL, JCL, Z/OS) to support a well-established insurance client in maintaining and enhancing its mission-critical mainframe systems.

Location: Hybrid (2 days onsite/week – Wednesday anchor day)

Contract Length: 1 Year (with potential extension)

Start Date: ASAP

Participate in an on-call rotation (1 week at a time, up to 5x/year) to support batch processing.

Project Overview:

We're supporting a well-established insurance client in maintaining and enhancing its mission-critical mainframe systems. The work is primarily focused on supporting and developing COBOL-based applications that process core business operations such as billing, reporting, data extracts, and integrations with external partners (e.g., banks, government). The environment includes regular production support, defect resolution, and small-to-medium system enhancements.

Responsibilities:

• Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot applications written in COBOL and JCL on the Z/OS platform.
• Handle production support activities including batch job monitoring, defect resolution, and root cause analysis.
• Implement minor enhancements and fulfill ad hoc requests from business and operational teams.
• Work closely with internal business teams (billing, finance, data warehouse, print) to ensure accurate data processing and reporting.
• Collaborate with business analysts, QA, and fellow developers on day-to-day support and change requests.

Must-Have Skills & Experience:

• 5+ years of hands-on experience with COBOL, JCL, TSO, CICS on Z/OS.
• Strong understanding of batch processing, IBM utilities, and mainframe debugging tools.
• Proven ability to work independently to analyze and resolve production issues.
• Experience working in a structured SDLC or ITIL-based support environment.
• Comfortable working in a hybrid model – on-site 2x per week in Toronto.

Nice-to-Have / Assets:

• Insurance industry experience – particularly in personal and commercial lines.
• Experience collaborating with data, finance, or reporting teams.
• Familiarity with secure data practices, retention, and compliance is a bonus.
• Exposure to Java or service-based integrations (minimal relevance for this role).
• Experience in organizations with legacy modernization projects (helpful, but not required).
