Job summary

Telesat, a leading global satellite operator headquartered in Ottawa, seeks a Senior LEO Satellite Operations Engineer to ensure effective in‑orbit performance of Lightspeed subsystems. You will lead integration, SOC testing, and development of operations products, collaborating with Space Segment and SOC teams to optimize operations and training.

The role requires 6–9 years in satellite operations, a degree in engineering, strong English, and experience with satellite software systems;

Qualifications

• Masters or Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering.
• Background in Aerospace technologies and satellite operations software systems.
• Minimum 6–9 years experience in Satellite Operations Engineering.
• Knowledge of satellite subsystem design and operation.
• Knowledge of electronics, control systems and RF communications.
• Experience developing software across platforms and tools.
• Strong analytical and English communication skills.
• Independent and self-motivated, with the ability to work effectively in a team.

Responsibilities

• Lead integration of SCS systems and development of satellite operations products.
• Lead SOC testing, validation and verification of SatOps systems.
• Develops satellite operations products and implementation into the SCS systems.
• Lead Satellite Operations Centre concepts of operation and administrative systems development.
• Work with Space Segment team to evolve CONOPS for LEOP and routine operations.
• Support Satellite Operations Centre systems testing, validation and verification of SatOps products, SCS system deliveries and training.
• Maintain satellite operating procedures.
• Support automation development for satellite operations procedures; track performance.
• Provide inputs to Satellite Data Platform design, analytics and maintenance.
• Details satellite operations processes within the SOC; refining satellite control guidelines outside of the SCS.
• Provide engineering guidance to satellite controllers during all phases of operations.
• Provide engineering oversight and/or training on satellite operations products and supporting tooling.

As a member of the LEO SOC Satellite Operations team, the Senior LEO Satellite Operations Engineer will provide technical support for engineering aspects related to ensuring effective in-orbit operations of all on-board subsystems on the Lightspeed satellite bus, in order to maximize subsystem health, performance and commercial availability. This includes working, in collaboration, with others within the Satellite Operations team and other Lightspeed segments to improve efficiencies, through innovation, across all facets of in-orbit fleet operations.

• Leads integration of SCS systems and development of satellite operations products;
• Leads SOC testing, validation and verification of SatOps systems;
• Develops of satellite operations products and implementation into the SCS systems;
• Leads Satellite Operations Centre (SOC) concepts of operation and administrative systems development;
• Working with Space Segment team, manages evolution of satellite operations concept of operations (CONOPS) for LEOP and routine operations phases;
• Supports Satellite Operations Centre systems testing, validation and verification of SatOps products, SCS system deliveries and training;
• Manages maintenance of satellite operating procedures;
• Supports automation development for satellite operations procedures; tracks performance;
• Provide inputs to Satellite Data Platform (SDP) design, analytics and maintenance; focusing on short and long term trending of satellite TM data;
• Details satellite operations processes within the SOC; refining satellite control guidelines outside of the SCS;
• Provide engineering guidance to satellite controllers during all phases of operations;
• Provide engineering oversight and/or training on all matters pertaining to the development and use of the satellite operations products and supporting trending and analysis tools.

• Masters or Bachelor's degree in an Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering, or the equivalent;
• A background in Aerospace technologies and expertise in satellite operations software systems and development;
• Minimum of 6-9 years experience in Satellite Operations Engineering;
• Knowledge of satellite subsystem design and operation;
• Knowledge of electronics, control systems and radio frequency communications;
• Experience in developing software with a variety of platforms and programming tools;
• Strong analytical, problem solving, real-time decision-making, planning and organizational skills;
• Excellent verbal and written English communications skills;
• Independent and self-motivated, with the ability to work effectively both individually and in a team environment
• Knowledge of containerized software platforms is an asset;
• Experience with Machine Learning and Data Analytics is a big asset;
• Experience in Python programming is an asset.
