Job summary

Telesat, a leading global satellite operator headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, is seeking a Senior LEO Satellite Operations Engineer. You will support in-orbit operations of Lightspeed satellites, collaborate across teams, and enhance fleet efficiency with innovative SOC tools and processes.

The role requires a strong background in aerospace/engineering, 6–9 years of experience, and proficiency in programming and RF systems. Excellent English communication and teamwork are essential.

Qualifications

• Masters or bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering (or equivalent).
• 6–9 years of experience in Satellite Operations Engineering.
• Knowledge of satellite subsystem design and operation.
• Knowledge of electronics, control systems and RF communications.
• Strong verbal and written English communications skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead integration of SOC systems and development of satellite operations products.
• Lead SOC testing, validation and verification of SatOps systems.
• Develop satellite operations products and implement into the SCS systems.
• Lead Satellite Operations Centre (SOC) concepts of operation and administrative systems development.
• Work with Space Segment team to evolve CONOPS for LEOP and routine operations phases.
• Support SOC systems testing, validation and verification of SatOps products, SCS system deliveries and training.
• Maintain satellite operating procedures.
• Provide inputs to Satellite Data Platform (SDP) design, analytics and maintenance.
• Details satellite operations processes within the SOC; refine satellite control guidelines outside the SCS.
• Provide engineering guidance to satellite controllers during all phases of operations.
• Provide engineering oversight and training on satellite operations products and tools.

As a member of the LEO SOC Satellite Operations team, the Senior LEO Satellite Operations Engineer will provide technical support for engineering aspects related to ensuring effective in-orbit operations of all on-board subsystems on the Lightspeed satellite bus, in order to maximize subsystem health, performance and commercial availability. This includes working, in collaboration, with others within the Satellite Operations team and other Lightspeed segments to improve efficiencies, through innovation, across all facets of in-orbit fleet operations.

Responsibilities

• Leads integration of SCS systems and development of satellite operations products;
• Leads SOC testing, validation and verification of SatOps systems;
• Develops of satellite operations products and implementation into the SCS systems;
• Leads Satellite Operations Centre (SOC) concepts of operation and administrative systems development;
• Working with Space Segment team, manages evolution of satellite operations concept of operations (CONOPS) for LEOP and routine operations phases;
• Supports Satellite Operations Centre systems testing, validation and verification of SatOps products, SCS system deliveries and training;
• Manages maintenance of satellite operating procedures;
• Provide inputs to Satellite Data Platform (SDP) design, analytics and maintenance; focusing on short and long term trending of satellite TM data;
• Details satellite operations processes within the SOC; refining satellite control guidelines outside of the SCS;
• Provide engineering guidance to satellite controllers during all phases of operations;
• Provide engineering oversight and/or training on all matters pertaining to the development and use of the satellite operations products and supporting trending and analysis tools.

Education and Experience

• Masters or Bachelor's degree in an Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering, or the equivalent;
• A background in Aerospace technologies and expertise in satellite operations software systems and development;
• Minimum of 6-9 years experience in Satellite Operations Engineering;
• Knowledge of satellite subsystem design and operation;
• Knowledge of electronics, control systems and radio frequency communications;
• Experience in developing software with a variety of platforms and programming tools;
• Strong analytical, problem solving, real-time decision-making, planning and organizational skills;
• Excellent verbal and written English communications skills;
• Independent and self-motivated, with the ability to work effectively both individually and in a team environment
• Knowledge of containerized software platforms is an asset;
• Experience with Machine Learning and Data Analytics is a big asset;
• Experience in Python programming is an asset.
