Senior Legal Counsel - Full Time Management Position

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week

Salary: $94,654 to $123,264

Position Summary:

The Legal Counsel is responsible for representing the Agency as legal counsel in all legal matters related to the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA). Responsibilities include preparing and presenting cases in the Superior Court of Justice and other hearings, tribunals, and boards, managing appeals, and providing legal consultation to Agency staff on protection case work. The incumbent acts as the chief liaison between the agency and the courts to promote efficient child protection litigation and oversees the Legal Services unit.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

• Sound knowledge of legislation concerning children and families, especially the Child and Family Services Act.
• Understanding of litigation processes and procedures.
• Skills in mediation regarding the best interests of the child and the Society.
• Ability to assess evidentiary merits of child protection cases.
• Knowledge of current legal decisions and litigation techniques.
• Legal research skills.
• Organizational and administrative abilities.
• Leadership and managerial skills.
• Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and team spirit.
• Ability to travel and work flexible hours.

Qualifications:

• LL.B. from a recognized Law School.
• 3 to 5 years of experience in family law, child protection, or similar fields.
• Management experience is an asset.

Requirements:

• Valid Ontario Driver's Licence, access to a vehicle with OPCF6A Insurance endorsement, and minimum $1,000,000 liability coverage.
• Clear criminal record, vulnerable sector check, and driver’s abstract.
• Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario and licensed to practice law in Ontario.
