Senior Legal Advisor

Department : Legal Department, Canada

Type of employment : Permanent, Full Time (40 hours)

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Head of Legal, Canada, as part of the Canadian legal team, the Senior Legal Counsel will be responsible for mandates in general commercial law, litigation management and retail industry regulatory law.

What You’ll Do

Here are a few ways you can make a difference :

  • Drafting, reviewing, validating and negotiating contracts and agreements, and identifying legal risks where applicable;
  • Assess the regulatory environment for mobility, transportation, electric vehicles, tobacco and alcohol sales, lotteries and gaming;
  • Ensure the application of the normative framework in contractual matters;
  • Prepare and provide legal opinions, mainly in civil and commercial law;
  • Work in partnership with the various business units, particularly in identifying strategies and desired objectives in the preparation of files;
  • Develop solutions to legal problems raised by business unit employees, and provide the necessary support to implement these solutions;
  • Ensure that the company's regular activities are carried out in compliance with laws, corporate policies and sound governance and business practices;
  • Advise business units on legislative changes in the sector;
  • Maintain up-to-date skills and knowledge in areas of law relevant to practice;
  • Occasional interaction with external lawyers, consultants, professionals and suppliers;
  • Follow-up on various files submitted for analysis and recommendations; and
  • Perform all related functions associated with the profession.

What You’ll Need

Education :

  • Bachelor's degree in law;
  • Member in good standing of a Canadian law society (Quebec, Ontario or Alberta preferred).

Experience :

  • A minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience in administrative, regulatory, commercial or litigation law, in a corporate or law firm environment;

Knowledge and skills :

  • Strong skills in negotiating and drafting various agreements;
  • Proven ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision and to manage several concurrent files within established deadlines;
  • Analytical and synthesizing skills, ability to explain legal concepts in layman's terms;
  • Ability to organize work and manage priorities;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to adapt to a constantly changing environment;
  • Bilingualism required (Advanced French and English) both spoken and written, as the person will be required to work and communicate regularly in English while performing the tasks outlined above. Specifically, the role requires collaboration with global teams.
