Job summary

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) is seeking a Senior Law Clerk to join the Legal Services Division at Head Office in Toronto. The role supports regulatory and court proceedings, drafts documentation, and advises on compliance matters.

You will work under the Legal Director, manage files, prepare materials for hearings, and ensure deadlines are met in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Law Clerk, preferably in regulatory environment.
  • Completion of a post-secondary Law Clerk program or ILCO Certification.
  • Superior writing skills and ability to compile information from files to draft documentation.
  • Research abilities to locate relevant cases and supporting records.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines with high-volume workload.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Familiarity with legal terminology to prepare documents.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare legal documentation and provide support services to Counsel.

The Legal Services Division at the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) provides essential legal services that support the organization’s regulatory role. The team plays a critical role in supporting and advising on regulatory responses and sector governance, advising on a wide range of corporate and administrative law issues, representing the Registrar at Tribunal and Court proceedings, preparing legal documentation for regulatory decisions, advising in relation to ongoing compliance matters, drafting contracts, impacting legislative developments, and providing legal support for regulatory governance and policy initiatives.

We are looking for a Senior Law Clerk to join our team.

Under The Direction Of The Legal Director, You Will Have The Opportunity To Make a Meaningful Impact In The Following Ways
  • Leveraging your superior written communication and organizational skills, prepare legal documentation, and provide legal support services.
  • Provide both administrative and clerical support services to Counsel.
  • Provide detailed and technical information internally and to the public and licensees/registrants, including as related to status of matters.
  • Review files at each stage of the various compliance and eligibility processes to ensure that they are complete and accurate in accordance with the Division Manual and request additional materials as required.
  • Prepare documentation for hearings, appeals and judicial review applications consistent with applicable rules of practice or procedure.
  • Apply legislation to extract information from reports and applications and draft the initial copy of relevant documentation.
  • Maintain files in an orderly manner consistent with Division practices.
  • Monitor the status of files and prepare monthly statistics and a monthly report tracking the files, including numbers and status.
  • Proactively identify and alert counsel to issues and potential risks, including as related to timelines, service and communications.
You Have
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Law Clerk, preferably in a regulatory environment.
  • Completion of a post-secondary Law Clerk program, or ILCO Certification.
  • Superior writing skills including the ability to compile information from files in order to draft documentation.
  • Research abilities required to find relevant cases and supporting records.
  • The ability to work within strict time constraints while maintaining a high volume of work.
  • The ability to meet constant deadlines by working both independently as well as collaboratively in a highly engaged team environment.
  • Detail orientation with strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • A working knowledge of legal terminology and phraseology in order to prepare legal documents
  • Familiarity with the application of various pieces of legislation (i.e. Liquor Licence and Control Act, Gaming Control Act, Horse Racing Licence Act, Cannabis Licence Act, Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code).
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with an ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders (i.e. AGCO staff, police, court office employees and the public).
  • Advanced computer skills using various MS Office Suite Programs, and experience using Quick Law, West Law and Canlii.
  • The successful candidate must be eligible to work in Canada and will be subject to a criminal background check.
