Canadian North - Human Resources Labour Relations Specialist

About the Position:

The Human Resources Labour Relations Specialist supports and assists the HR team with all Labour Relations functions and initiatives. Responsibilities include interpreting, administering, and applying collective agreements and handling other employment/labour relations matters.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to strategic improvement goals aimed at enhancing employee satisfaction, customer service, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with Union and Association leadership, focusing on collaborative problem solving.
  • Manage relationships with the unionized workforce proactively and non-adversarially.
  • Provide day-to-day support, guidance, and advice to managers on employee issues, including performance management, absence management, and progressive discipline.
  • Assist managers with labour issues and the interpretation, administration, and application of collective agreements.
  • Investigate and resolve employee-related concerns as needed.
  • Participate in C-65 Harassment investigations.
  • Represent Human Resources at disciplinary, grievance hearings, and terminations.
  • Manage the grievance process to ensure timely resolution; participate in grievance hearings.
  • Assist with arbitration preparation.
  • Support collective bargaining processes through research, record-keeping, and meeting coordination; participate in negotiations.
  • Collaborate with the HR team to meet company needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and travel as required.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in collective bargaining preparation.
  • Experience in administering collective agreements with a proven track record of positive management/labour relations.
  • Broad knowledge of federal legislation including the Canada Labour Code, Canadian Human Rights Act, WSIB, and health and safety laws.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment, maintaining accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Client-focused with sound judgment.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement, initiative, creativity, and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to speak Inuktitut is an asset.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet; experience with Ultipro preferred.
  • Must be able to obtain and retain an Airport Restricted Area Pass according to Transport Canada's regulations.
