Job summary

Citi is seeking a Senior Java Engineer to design and deliver high-performance backend systems using Java, Spring Boot, and MongoDB, while integrating AI-assisted development practices into engineering workflows.

You will own modules end-to-end, ensure reliable, scalable services, and contribute to standards that shape how the team builds and ships software in a hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend Java experience in enterprise environments.
• Deep expertise with Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data JPA, and Spring Security.
• Design and implement RESTful APIs and microservices that are scalable, secure, and well-documented.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and tooling (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions).
• Solid Git version control and Gitflow in team delivery contexts.
• Familiar with AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Devin, Claude, Codex).
• Knowledge of REST and SOAP web services and data formats (XML/JSON).

Citi is looking for a Senior Java Engineer to design and deliver high-performance backend systems at the intersection of enterprise software development and applied AI tooling. Based within Citi's Technology organization, this role offers the opportunity to build production-grade Java applications using Spring Boot and MongoDB while actively integrating modern AI-assisted development practices into everyday engineering workflows. You will operate with meaningful autonomy, owning application modules end-to-end and contributing to the standards that shape how the team builds and ships software.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy robust backend applications using Java and Spring Boot, with MongoDB as the primary data store, ensuring performance, reliability, and maintainability at scale.
• Build and maintain RESTful APIs and microservices that meet defined business requirements, translating complex functional needs into clean, efficient backend solutions.
• Own and deliver discrete application modules from requirements through to production, maintaining accountability across the full software development lifecycle including analysis, design, construction, testing, and release.
• Identify and surface technical and delivery risks early, proposing concrete mitigation plans to keep projects on track.
• Integrate and champion AI-assisted development tools — including GitHub Copilot, Devin, Claude, and Codex — to accelerate delivery and improve code quality across the team.
• Define and uphold engineering standards and operational processes, contributing to a consistent and high-quality development practice.
• Apply sound technical judgement when assessing the impact of decisions on system integrity, data quality, and business outcomes, escalating issues transparently where needed.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• 5+ years of backend software engineering experience, with a focus on Java application development in commercial or enterprise environments.
• Deep expertise across the Spring Framework ecosystem, including Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data JPA, and Spring Security.
• Demonstrated ability to design and implement RESTful APIs and microservices architectures that are scalable, secure, and well-documented.
• Hands‑on experience with CI/CD pipelines and tooling, including Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Docker, Kubernetes, and Maven or Gradle.
• Solid command of Git version control and established branching strategies such as Gitflow, applied in a team delivery context.
• Practical experience working with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Devin, Claude, Codex, or equivalent, as part of a professional engineering workflow.
• Familiarity with web service standards including REST and SOAP, and data formats including XML and JSON.

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

• Frontend development experience using Angular, enabling collaboration with full stack teams and contribution to end-to-end feature delivery is nice to have.
• Experience managing or contributing to software delivery projects, with the ability to coordinate workstreams and meet shifting deadlines effectively.
• Exposure to project management or consulting methodologies that support structured delivery in complex engineering environments.
• A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience.
