Senior Interlocking Hardware Design Engineer
Location: Toronto, ON, CA
Company: Alstom
At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, more than 80,000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.
Imagine playing a central role in reducing the carbon footprint of Canada's busiest public transit system and doing so with a consistently ranked Top Employer with a global reach. As part of the ONxpress consortium, Alstom is proudly working to transform the collective mobility of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas (GTHA) through the On-Corridor Works project. The GO Expansion scope includes new electric locomotives, train control systems, network electrification, signalling, telecommunications, and digital systems.
Purpose:
- The Interlocking (IXL) is a system composed of Mechanical, Electromechanical, Electric, Electronic, and Software components aimed at ensuring safe movements of trains.
- The purpose of the job is to identify and analyze customer and product requirements to define and design standardized IXL architectures (functional, physical, and operational) and the related configurations of the IXL equipment suitable for tenders, prototyping, series production, and project deployment.
- The IXL System designer participates in project deployment, addressing specific issues or needs identified throughout the project lifecycle requiring corrective or evolutionary actions on the IXL architecture and pre-fitted solutions, with a focus during the initial deployment of the architecture/solution, ensuring proper verification and continuous improvement.
Key Accountabilities:
- Deliver design scheme plan layouts, Control Tables, safe HMI layouts, hardware configuration drawings, cable core plans, signaling equipment room layouts, and diagnostic application data.
- Ensure application and adherence to reference design methods & tools, requesting deviations in cooperation with the Project IXL design leader whenever appropriate.
- Participate actively in IXL detailed design review meetings and provide activity progress reports.
- Organize and produce documentation, software, and hardware design deliveries according to project templates and needs.
- Support the Project IXL design leader and Project V&V manager in debugging design issues.
- Analyze and manage design change requests and participate in defining the HW package to be delivered to the V&V, installation, and Testing & Commissioning teams.
- Ensure independence of design activity from verification activity.
- Collaborate with Project IXL design leaders, Project Engineering Managers, and Product development teams.
- Capture all internal and external hardware interfaces and the environmental/climatic installation conditions of the IXL system.
- Identify trackside equipment to be controlled and detected and the application conditions related to trackside engineering.
- Evaluate space constraints for the installation of pre-fitted configurations of the IXL solution.
- Consider work methods constraints for the installation of pre-fitted configurations of the IXL solution.
- Capture IXL product application conditions, functional features, and capabilities.
- Define and lead the design of pre-fitted solutions for Central Interlocking Computer, Remote Area Controllers, and Safe HMI Clients, including racks, cubicle housing, internal cabling, power supply needs, and interfaces towards other subsystems/equipment.
- Organize and lead activities for producing a comprehensive documentation set to facilitate correct assembly and off-site testing (FAT) of pre-fitted solutions.
- Define the IXL equipment breakdown (racks, electronic actuators, power supply, cabling) of the pre-fitted solution.
- Ensure application and consistency with reference processes applicable to solution design, methods & tools, requesting deviations whenever appropriate.
- Support Installation and Test & Commissioning teams during the first installation of the solution and its testing, using on-site activity feedback for continuous improvement of solutions and documentation.
- Share knowledge of IXL system architecture features with the project engineering community.
Requirements:
- Engineering Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronic, Automation Engineering, or similar.
- P. Eng certification or in progress.
- 5-10 years in relevant positions (systems/sub-systems application design or integration, electrotechnical product development) in a highly complex and normative environment (railway signaling, aerospace, defense).
- Good analytical skills and previous experience in system design & integration.
- Knowledge of Interlocking Systems, safety principles, and power supply background.
- Knowledge of Alstom products.
- Experience in interlocking hardware design generation.
- More than 10 years in relevant positions (systems/sub-systems application design) in a highly complex and normative environment (railway signaling, CBTC, aerospace, defense).
- Open-minded and multi-disciplinary approach.
- Problem setting and problem-solving skills.
- Sense of urgency.
- Strong writing skills: clarity, rigor, and concision.
