Job summary

A leading company in the energy sector is seeking a Senior Instrument Engineer in Sarnia, Ontario. Responsible for the design, installation, and maintenance of instrumentation and control systems, you will play a key role in complex capital projects. To be responsible for ensuring the efficient design, installation, calibration, and maintenance of instrumentation and control systems, contributing to the overall success of the project

Responsibilities:

  • Assigned as working I&C discipline lead (sub-lead / area lead) for multiple sustaining capital projects.
  • Manage assigned work effectively, prioritizing, executing, reporting, managing schedule and budget.
  • Establishing the scope of work, effort hour estimates and deliverable lists.
  • Preparation and review of all discipline engineering and design deliverables, including drawings, instrument index, specifications, I/O list, I/O assignment, equipment list, and alarm rationalization list.
  • Preparation and review of control room layouts, instrument loop diagrams, wiring drawings, instrument location plans, installation details, fire and gas (F&G) location plans, cable schedules, cabinet, and JB.
  • Detailed engineering of field instrumentation (flow, level, pressure, temperature, analyzers), valves (control, on-off, shutdown, motorized) and gas chromatograph system
  • Complete or review calculations for control valves, PSVs, flow meters and thermo-wells
  • Control system (BPCS, ESD, F&G, etc.) design, procurement and implementation
  • Provide input to and review Instrument installation and location deliverables
  • Perform inter-disciplinary squad checks (esp. piping, model, mechanical equipment and buildings)
  • Enter/review instrument database content per P&IDs
  • Developing and recommending improvements in design standards to lower costs, improve work quality and facilitate maintenance.
  • Develop specifications, data sheets, material requisitions and technical bid evaluation for field instruments, analyzers, and system cabinets.
  • Review vendor documents and quotations for compliance with project requirements
  • Develop I&C MTOs and major equipment costs for capital cost estimates at various project stages
  • Design cabinets and JBs, etc.
  • Support P&ID development
  • Participating in design reviews, HAZOPs, LOPA and SIL.
  • Reviewing project documents for scope, presentation, and technical accuracy.
  • Development of Control Narratives and Cause and Effect diagrams.
  • Providing home office engineering support to on-site personnel
  • Develop engineering work packages or Construction work packages.
  • Attending project team meetings, Client meetings & vendor review meetings
  • Carry out site surveys to gather detailed information for design needs.
  • Utilize the Workshare office or HVEC (High-Value Engineering Center) to complete the electrical deliverables.
  • Reviewing designs for constructability and accordance with project requirements.
  • Programming of PLC, DCS and SIS systems (i.e. Honeywell and Allen-Bradley)
  • Review drawings and designs to control quality and accuracy.
  • P. Eng. sealing of I&C deliverables
  • Supervise, Mentor, Coach, and support the team members on projects.
  • Shop inspections
  • Process Control System FAT/SAT
  • Site pre-commissioning activities
  • P. Eng. sealing of I&C deliverables

Knowledge/ Qualification/ Training/ Certification:

  • B. Tech/B.E. - Instrumentation or Electrical
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in Canada
  • At least 12 years of basic and detailed engineering experience in Upstream Oil & Gas, Refinery, & Petrochemical industry
  • Strong interpersonal leadership skills are critical due to the requirement for effective communication of complex issues across the organization, as well as for mentoring and consensus-building.
  • Exhibits an understanding of business drivers, management of change requirements, project management processes, and construction workflow.
  • Experience in the EPC industry, leading the local and workshare team, will be an asset.
  • Brownfield and Greenfield Experience is beneficial
  • Candidates who have experience in the Engineering office of Reputed Consulting Engineering Companies, preferably in the field of Refinery, Petrochemicals, Chemicals, Fertilizers, Oil & Gas, will be preferred
  • International Codes & Standards and Best Engineering Practices that apply to Automation
  • Automation workflow and interdisciplinary coordination
  • Adherence to HSE norms
  • Proficiency in understanding P&IDs and Process Control
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.


Communication:

  • Excellent command of the English language in both oral and written communication and skills.
