This employment opportunity is restricted to residents of Iqaluit only.


Reporting to the Coordinator Community Programs (South Baffin), the Senior Instructor, Academic Studies provides educational leadership and administers the Academic Studies Program.


The incumbent is responsible for instructing courses using a range of instructional styles applying adult education principles, evaluating student learning, and supervising the work of two instructors in the Academic Studies section. The incumbent’s instructional duties will be assigned to a variety of courses offered through the Academic Studies section at Nunatta Campus such as, but not limited to, Office Administration Certificate and Diploma, Adult Basic Education, ABE Essential Skills, and College Foundation Certificate. The incumbent must have expertise and be qualified to instruct in these academic programs.


The position is located in Iqaluit, Nunatta Campus and is responsible to the adult population of the community and works with various individuals, organizations, companies, and government departments in order to deliver relevant adult education programs. Working with co-instructors, the Senior Instructor, Academic Studies ensures that course delivery meets College policies and standards, is efficiently pursued, and is relevant to ongoing post-secondary education.


The incumbent will be a partner in delivering services that support and provide guidance to learners, which aim to improve their success rates in further post-secondary education and entry-level employment. As the incumbent will be teaching in the College Foundation Program, Office Administration Program, and/or other programs offered through Academic Studies, it is important that the incumbent be prepared to teach a variety of courses.


The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge and understanding of the recruitment and staffing process for term and indeterminate employees and GN casual hiring and payment procedures. Knowledge of Human Resource Practices and Employee Relations, as well as familiarity with interpreting collective agreements and personnel policies, records management and security critical to the ATIPP process is also required. These skills, knowledge and abilities would normally be obtained by: Successful completion of a Bachelor of Education with a specialization in post-secondary or a related field combination with 3 years minimum experience instructing adult learners in a post-secondary institution; supervisory experience, preferable in a college formal learning environment; an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.


The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English, and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets. Equivalencies consisting of a combination of education, knowledge, skills and abilities equal to the formal education and experience requirements may be considered.
