JOB SUMMARY:

The Senior Instructional Designer plays a key role in designing and implementing high-quality instructional materials and programs. This role requires collaboration with faculty, industry subject matter experts, and other stakeholders to ensure that learning experiences are engaging, industry-aligned, and pedagogically sound. The Senior Instructional Designer will also conduct needs assessments with industry partners to inform program development and provide training as needed. Additionally, they will be responsible for sourcing and supervising subject matter experts, facilitators, and skills coaches.

RESPONSIBILITIES and ACCOUNTABILITIES

Lead instructional design and development:

  • Lead the instructional design and development of new programs, ensuring consistency, relevance, and industry alignment.
  • Develop instructional materials and assessments aligned with best practices in adult learning and competency-based education.
  • Work with Canvas LMS to structure and organize courses effectively, developing templates as needed.
  • Utilize instructional technologies, including recording equipment and video editing tools, to enhance online learning experiences.

Lead team collaboration with industry and subject matter experts:

  • Conduct needs assessments with industry partners to identify workforce training requirements.
  • Source, hire, and supervise subject matter experts, facilitators, and skills coaches.
  • Provide training and support to subject matter experts, facilitators, and other stakeholders as needed.

Research and guidance:

  • Research new technologies, training, and upskilling methodology and practices.
  • Develop new internal templates, processes, and systems to simplify future instructional design projects.
  • Provide internal training to the Continuous Learning Department and mentorship to other instructional designers.

LMS and Course Development:

  • Work with Canvas LMS to structure and organize courses effectively, developing templates as needed.
  • Utilize instructional technologies, including recording equipment and video editing tools, to enhance online learning experiences.

Budget and Reporting:

  • Ensure programs are designed within budget.
  • Provide regular budget and progress reports.

Education:

  • Four-year Bachelor's degree in Education, Instructional Design, or a related field.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in instructional design, curriculum development, or online learning.
  • Experience in post-secondary is an asset.
  • Experience working with industry partners to develop training or educational programs.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of adult learning theories, instructional design models, and assessment strategies.
  • Experience ensuring compliance with accessibility standards (AODA, WCAG).
  • Strong experience with Canvas LMS and familiarity with the latest eLearning technologies.
  • Familiarity with video recording equipment and basic video editing software.

Skills:

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to supervise multiple stakeholders and deadlines.
