What makes us stand out?

KCB is an employee-owned mid-size consultancy with a reputation that exceeds our size. Our tag line “Down to Earth / Up to the Challenge” says a lot about who we are. Our staff are inquisitive, curious, and dedicated to solving complex problems. Our size allows us to draw on colleagues across the globe just as easily as if they were across the hall. We also advocate for continued professional development and encourage this by hosting a range of internal and external training sessions and encouraging staff to participate in conferences.

  • Creative perspectives that come through diverse and inclusive teams
  • Access to some of the sector's leading talent
  • International reputation for technical excellence, everyone maintains a technical focus
  • Appetite to tackle problems with unique complexities

What you would engage in:

Our focus is on the application of critical thinking to the management of mine waste and water. By continuing your career journey with us, you would be part of our Mining Environmental Group, based out of our Vancouver or Nanaimo office. The role of Senior Hydrotechnical Engineer will provide you with the opportunity to:

  • Work with the latest versions of software, including GoldSim, PCSWMM, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, Flow-2D/3D
  • Work on mine site wide water balance and water quality models (with the opportunity to use GoldSim)
  • Design hydrotechnical components for tailings storage facilities for global mining projects
  • Incorporate climate change resiliency in hydrotechnical design
  • Contribute to risk assessments, Dam Safety Reviews and risk-informed decision making
  • Engage with clients, colleagues and suppliers on environmentally focused field programs and design solutions
  • Lead less experienced staff through the methodologies of design solutions
  • Build client rapport as projects progress from feasibility through to mine closure

What we are looking for:

We are looking for a Senior Hydrotechnical Engineer to join our Vancouver-based engineering team to work on local and international mining and resource projects. Your experience will be applied to the planning, investigation, assessment, design and construction of tailings and water dams and waste storage for mining. Career development can be managed to support personal preferences such as niche, technical design specialists, or project participation in both technical dam engineering scopes and project management, or all-round engineering specialists.

What we require:

We respect the knowledge and experience you have gained to date and are willing to support you as you build on it. We do however require:

  • A degree in civil engineering: a master’s degree is considered an asset
  • 10+ years’ civil design experience related to surface water controls (preferably for mining or related industries), with a track record of continued development
  • You must be eligible to register as a professional engineer in Canada
  • Experience in hydrotechnical design analyses (e.g., water balance, open channel flow, erosion protection)
  • A general understanding of mining-related regulations and industry best practices
  • Passion for collaborating with clients and fostering long-term relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Enhanced communication skills, which should include experience in writing technical reports and general project correspondence
  • Experience in a safety-focused environment with near miss and incident reporting requirements

You will excel in our team if you have:

  • An ability to find creative solutions and know how to present them.
  • A willingness to mentor others and be mentored.
  • An ability to build rapport with clients, colleagues, and industry partners.
  • Demonstrate that you are flexible and seek solutions rather than focus on problems.
  • A willingness to travel and undertake fieldwork.
  • A proven ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

The salary for this position is $110,000 to $160,000 per year. Salary is based on applicable experience, education, and skill level.

Along with continued career development, KCB offers:

  • Hybrid work opportunities
  • Annual performance and salary review
  • Above average bonus payouts
  • Vacation policy that aligns to your experience
  • Paid OT, and sick days
  • Flexible benefits, including RSP, social, and mental well-being initiatives
  • Dedication to WEF’s “Four Pillars” of Environment Social Governance framework, Governance, People, Planet and Prosperity
