The Senior HVDC Application Engineer is an established leader within their engineering team. They drive business strategy through detailed technical and economic understanding of the marketplace and take the initiative to collaborate with business leaders to provide customers with optimal solutions that positively impact the business. The Senior HVDC Application Engineer serves as the technological point person for the entire Inquiry to Order (ITO) phase.

Responsibilities:

The Senior Electrical HVDC Application Engineer is responsible for all aspects of HV/EHV substation design, including:

  1. Defining and managing the HVDC engineering quality plan, supervising technical coordination across work packages.
  2. Collaborating with HVDC Product Delivery Group (PDG) in Stafford, UK, to define technically and economically sound HVDC solutions meeting customer requirements.
  3. Ensuring timely and quality project deliverables under HVDC PDG scope.
  4. Serving as the technical point person during the entire Inquiry to Order (ITO) phase, providing expertise and developing solutions in coordination with PDG and North America, interfacing with commercial teams.
  5. Supporting the creation of subcontractor and equipment bid packages.
  6. Leading all technical aspects of AC and DC power substation projects.
  7. Leading and guiding project teams to meet or exceed goals.
  8. Identifying stakeholders and ensuring effective communication for project alignment.
  9. Managing technical interfaces for HVDC solution integration and coordinating with discipline engineers.
  10. Overseeing engineering teams, coordinating with sourcing, and ensuring project specifications, costs, and schedules are met.
  11. Ensuring engineering solutions comply with customer specifications and interfacing with various engineering disciplines.
  12. Maintaining the reference solution established during ITO, managing change control processes.
  13. Reviewing engineering reports to ensure customer specifications are met.
  14. Designing physical outdoor substation layouts, overseeing related studies and calculations, and developing BOMs.
  15. Ensuring technical compliance with customer requirements and HVDC product scope.
  16. Supporting proposal development, including technical specifications, cost estimation, and vendor communication.
  17. Assisting in technical presentations to customers.
  18. Ensuring quality of team deliverables.
  19. Developing and monitoring engineering schedules, leading gate and design reviews.
  20. Supporting proposal development, including technical writing, estimation, and clarifications.
  21. Defining and validating engineering quality plans.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (BSEE preferred).
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in HVDC systems, FACTS, industrial, renewable, or utility HV & EHV substation design and commissioning.
  • Willingness to travel 20%, including internationally, in accordance with company policies.

Desired:

  • Preferred locations: Oakbrook Terrace, IL or La Prairie, Montreal; other GE offices considered.
  • Professional Engineering License (U.S. or Canada) and willingness to serve as responsible engineer.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Teamwork capability.
  • Creativity, leadership, and accountability for team results.
  • Extensive EPC environment experience in T&D, Power Generation, or Oil & Gas industries.
  • Knowledge of standards such as IEC 62351, IEEE 1588, IEEE 802, IEEE 1402, IEC 62501, NERC CIP.
  • Familiarity with utility standards (ConEd, PJM, NE, NYPA).
  • Proficiency with automation tools, CAD software, and BIM.
  • Experience with T&D substation systems, automation, SCADA, protection, and relay settings.
  • Knowledge of power system calculations, standards, and codes.
  • Field testing and commissioning experience.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Design solutions emphasizing constructability and safety.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement standards and quality programs.
  • Leadership in technical reviews and conflict resolution.
  • Innovative application of new technologies in HV/EHV substation design.
  • Proactive in driving business solutions that impact customer satisfaction and business success.
