Job summary

Tetra Tech, based in Yellowknife, NT, is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Technologist to join the Arctic Engineering team. The role focuses on laboratory and field testing, documentation, and delivering high-quality geotechnical results in northern conditions.

The candidate will lead lab QA/QC, perform drilling projects, and collaborate with engineers and project teams while traveling as needed; relocation or local residency is required.

Qualifications

  • Civil Engineering or Civil Technology diploma required.
  • 10+ years of experience with increasing responsibility in materials labs.
  • Experience in engineering consulting and materials testing is a plus.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License and clean driving record preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to document sampling/testing accurately.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain laboratory documentation including calibrations and shipping records for density gauges and lab equipment.
  • Provide training and leadership for junior technologists.
  • Review and approve field QC and lab testing reports.
  • Perform field and lab testing of soil, aggregates, and asphalt concrete; sieve analyses, density testing, and moisture content analyses.

Tetra Tech is adding a Senior Geotechnical Technologist to our Arctic Engineering team based in Yellowknife, NT . The successful candidate must be located in Yellowknife or willing to relocate.

Your Role:
  • Keeping laboratory documentation including calibrations and shipping records for nuclear density gauges and lab equipment up to date.
  • Providing training and general leadership for junior technologist.
  • Reviewing and approving field quality control and lab testing reports.
  • Performing field and laboratory testing of soil, aggregates, and asphalt concrete including, soil and aggregate sieve analysis, density testing using nuclear density gauges.
  • Preparation of Proctors and Marshall molds, asphalt cement content, sand equivalents, Atterberg limits and moisture content, including evaluation and reporting of properties and characteristics.
  • Completing drilling projects throughout the NWT and Nunavut.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • Civil Engineering or Civil Technology diploma.
  • 10 years or more of experience with increasing responsibility in materials labs.
  • Some materials testing experience would be considered an asset.
  • Previous experience working in engineering consulting would be considered an asset.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver's License and must provide current drivers abstract when applying, preference will be given to candidates with a clean driving record.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to properly document sampling and testing information in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and listening skills.
  • Good time management skills, the ability to work with minimal supervision and the ability to contribute to the Practice by being a team player.
  • Must be willing to travel and work in a field setting away from headquarters.
  • CSA approved Steel Toed Safety Boots required.
  • Be physically capable of performing the manual labour duties required.
