Senior Geotechnical Engineer - Pipelines (2025060605)

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for aSenior Geotechnical Engineerwith a focus onPipelinesto join our team inEdmonton, Alberta.

Thurber is a specialized consulting firm with a focus on geotechnical engineering. Our project work includes transportation, large and small infrastructure, natural hazards, development and more. We undertake challenging assignments that can include steep terrain, deep foundations, compressible soils, landslides, contamination, or other complications.

As our Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support and leadership on projects and for staff, including conducting technical reviews of calculations and analyses, as well as performing technical analyses where appropriate.
  • Provide guidance, and where necessary, support in coordination, preparation of cost estimates, tender submissions, technical documentation, client reports, progress reports, project scheduling / resourcing, and meeting deadlines and budgets on projects.
  • Scoping projects and assisting in the preparation of proposals.
  • Support mentoring, coaching, and training of staff.
  • Help promote Thurber mission, vision, and values amongst Thurber staff.
  • Work with the Branch Manager in the development of new business opportunities.
  • Establishing, developing, promoting and maintaining relationships with clients.
  • Active participation in the field on a project specific basis as dictated by the needs of the project to meet client expectations and project objectives.
  • Manage projects and lead multidisciplinary teams.
  • Travel to project locations, as well as to Client offices and other Thurber Branch offices.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a post-secondary program in Civil or Geological Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 to 15 years of relevant experience in the Geotechnical or Geological Engineering field. Local Canadian experience strongly preferred.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers license.
  • Comfortable driving mid to full-sized pickup trucks in urban, rural, and construction environments.
  • Comfortable working in a variety of environments, including local and remote construction sites.
  • Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required.
  • Membership with APEGA and/or EGBC.
  • Graduate Degree (Masters or higher).
  • General understanding of Western Canadian geomorphology and associated landforms, processes, and hazards.
  • Able to conduct desktop and field level terrain assessments.
  • Experienced in the interpretation and utilization of aerial photographs, as well as satellite and LiDAR imagery in the assessment of terrain and geohazards.
  • Experienced in geotechnical hazard detection and monitoring methods and familiar with new data-gathering techniques and technologies.
  • Experienced in pipeline routing and trenchless crossing assessments.
  • Experienced in interpretation of field and laboratory testing and providing soil parameters for pipe-soil interaction analyses.
  • Experienced in the use of commercial analytical software packages in the assessment of slope stability.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word processing).
  • Ability to work independently and cooperate with a team in various environments.
