Job summary

AECOM in Canada seeks a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to lead tailings dam design within the Tailings and Mine Waste team. You will serve as Engineer of Record on mine-waste projects across Canada, ensuring technical excellence and regulatory compliance.

You will provide technical direction, mentorship, and collaboration with clients and global project teams to develop sustainable solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline is required.
  • 8+ years of tailings and mine waste experience.
  • Experience as Engineer of Record on large tailings facilities.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • 20+ years of tailings management experience is preferred, ideally in Canada.
  • Bilingual in French and English; valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical delivery of conceptual through detailed designs of mine waste facilities (tailings dams, stacks, co-disposal facilities).
  • Fulfill the role of Engineer of Record on tailings dams or similar embankment systems.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to project teams.
  • Perform independent technical reviews of reports and designs.
  • Advise clients on regulatory compliance and standards.
  • Participate in AECOM’s Technical Practice Group.
  • Collaborate with clients to develop long‑term, sustainable solutions.

Job Description
Senior Geotechnical Engineer

AECOM is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer for our Tailings and Mine Waste team in Canada to lead tailings dam design and serve as an Engineer of Record for tailings management projects across Canada and elsewhere.

This role emphasizes technical leadership and project execution, ensuring technical excellence and compliance with regulatory standards in tailings management.

This position may be based in any of AECOM’s Canadian offices.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Lead the technical delivery of conceptual through detailed designs of mine waste management facilities (e.g., tailings dams, filtered stacks, co-disposal facilities, waste dumps) and water management facilities (e.g., mine water retention dams, seepage collection ponds).
  • Fulfill the role of Engineer of Record (EOR) on tailings dams or similar embankment systems.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to technical team members.
  • Perform independent technical reviews of engineering reports and designs.
  • Provide expert advice to clients on engineering matters, including compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
  • Actively participate in AECOM’s Technical Practice Group.
  • Partner with clients to develop long‑term, sustainable solutions.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in the tailings and mine waste sector.
  • Previous experience serving as Engineer of Record for large tailings facilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • 20+ years of progressive experience in tailings management, preferably within Canada.
  • Highly collaborative, with the ability to build strong working relationships across AECOM and with global project teams.
  • Proven experience leading and building multidisciplinary teams.
  • Bilingualism in French and English.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Additional Information

Sponsorship for Canadian employment authorization is not available for this position.

To support this commitment, all newly hired employees are required to attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office location as a condition of employment.

Offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The range for this position is $120000 to $200000.
