Job description

BGC is seeking a Senior Geochemist or Hydrogeochemist with an expert understanding of water quality, metal leaching (ML) and acid rock drainage (ARD) theory and practice. The successful candidate will join our rapidly growing team of geochemical specialists and have a leadership role in advancing the strategic vision and direction of the Geochemistry Team. In addition to this strategic alignment, the candidate will work closely with project managers, engineers, and geoscientists across BGC on large multi-disciplinary projects as well as geochemistry-focused projects. The ideal candidate will help to anchor the geochemistry team at BGC, providing guidance, technical knowledge and leadership, and mentorship as we continue to advance our state of practice and develop the geochemistry team at BGC.

This position can be based at any of BGCs Canadian or US office locations.

Responsibilities

  • Act as technical lead and / or technical reviewer on project scope design and interpretation for metal leaching and acid rock drainage (ML / ARD), water quality, source term development and predictive water quality modeling projects
  • Integrate with hydrogeology and hydrology teams on coupled water balance and water quality modeling projects
  • Manage projects, including proposals, budgets, schedules, staffing and scopes
  • Collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Supervise, train, and mentor junior and intermediate staff in the field and office
  • Participate in business development and identify new opportunities, promoting BGCs capacity for undertaking innovative and advanced hydrogeochemical projects
  • Present results to internal and external groups
  • Author or co-author reports
  • Work with client and partner representatives
  • Travel as required to North and South American remote sites to support junior team members, gain familiarity of project sites, and serve our clients
  • Help promote BGC vision, values and culture amongst BGC staff

Required Education & Professional Standing

  • Graduate degree in chemistry, geochemistry, geology, hydrogeology, geological engineering, or related discipline
  • Registered professional, P.Geo. or P.Eng. with EGBC or similar association

Required Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in metal leaching and acid rock drainage assessments, water quality assessments, and predictive water quality modeling projects
  • Experience contributing to various stages of the environmental assessment and permitting phases of a project, including : bulk sample programs, environmental applications, permitting, water quality modeling / prediction, management and closure planning
  • Experience with the design of monitoring programs, interpretation of data from geochemical static and kinetic programs, from scoping level to feasibility; from Environmental Assessment through permitting; and from operations through closure / remediation
  • Familiar with a variety of geochemical and hydrological modeling platforms including PHREEQC, Geochemists Workbench, HYDRUS, MODFLOW and / or GoldSim
  • Experience using water quality and geochemical data to develop water quality models, set permit limits or similar thresholds / criteria, and develop a variety of operational monitoring plans
  • Strong foundation in low temperature geochemistry, water quality, ML / ARD theory and practice
  • Able to work efficiently with large datasets using database management programs such as EQWIN or EQuIS, Microsoft Access
  • Proficient in technical writing; able to present, prepare and review reports
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong leadership and project management skills
  • Able to communicate with clients, understand their project goals and apply that understanding to project work
  • Experience with mentoring / teaching or leading teams of junior / intermediate staff is expected
  • Strong familiarity with a Canadian provincial regulatory environment, as it relates to metal mining project submissions for Environmental Assessment and / or permitting is expected

Drivers License

BGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck. Upon hiring, BGCwill requirea drivers abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $125,000-$190,000 CAD per annum, however base pay will be commensurate with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. BGC's compensation package also includes a training allowance and a comprehensive medical and dental plan.
