Senior GCP Cloud Engineer with terraform experience to support a cloud acceleration project with one of our major banking clients- 37746

Location Address: Hybrid - Toronto– coming in on an ad hoc basis for meetings (1 every 2 weeks on Wednesdays) – strong preference for candidates in the GTA

Contract Duration: 4 months (Possibility of extension for 1 year total term & possibility conversion to FTE)

Story Behind the Need

  • Business group: Cloud Engineering – main teams are responsible for creating platform (Kubernetes) and all connections for logging monitoring chargeback and setting up all processes around creating/establishing Cloud resources for different projects; creating processes for automating releases; spearheading creation and management of new resources coming to Bank; some teams are responsible for CICD processes – encompassing Bank’s security and auditable processes to go from development/non-prod to production environment; DevOps teams assisting in SDLC; troubleshooting and acting as a point person between development and operations teams.
  • The Bank has embarked on the journey to modernize both development practices and tools. One of the main areas of transformation is the public cloud and the various platform technologies that support both development and operations on the cloud.

Project: Cloud Acceleration Program

  • Moving towards Google Cloud, team will be focusing on virtual learning machines in the Cloud, initiative to move virtual machines from private cloud environment VMWare to GCVE/GCE environments; in initial phases; program will take a few years before is fully completed
  • As a member of the Cloud Storage team, this individual is responsible for supporting the banks CAP initiative with respect to Google Cloud Storage solutions. This individual will support and create IaC code, automation, policies and patterns around Google Cloud NetApp Volumes (GCNV), Google Cloud Storage buckets (GCS) and persistent disks.

Typical Day in Role:

  • As a member of the Cloud Storage team, this individual is responsible for supporting the banks CAP initiative with respect to Google Cloud Storage solutions. This individual will support and create IaC code, automation, policies and patterns around Google Cloud NetApp Volumes (GCNV), Google Cloud Storage buckets (GCS) and persistent disks.
  • Key accountabilities include design, development and maintenance of cloud platforms, services, and components to enable safe enterprise-wide use of public cloud offerings
  • Technical ownership/leadership of a component of a larger product.
  • Designing, implementing, and refactoring code (typically Go, Python).
  • Ensuring software, programs and applications are developed and/or configured to meet high availability, integrity and reliability, security, and compliance requirements.
  • Working with other lead engineers and architects on breaking-down, scoping and estimating tasks.
  • Working with application teams for successful onboarding onto the Platform
  • Participating in planning and retrospective sessions, attending stand-ups, etc.
  • Provide mentorship, peer review and code review
  • Lead a product/service, and define functions or features for cloud platforms, lead the work of 4+ engineers
  • Be able to build and operate the highly available and scalable software and infrastructure.
  • Day: stand-up/daily scrum with team in Agile framework, 2-week sprint periods; tracking work in Kanban; work on different tasks and provide updates; not always deploying at end of every sprint but working towards tasks set on roadmap

Must Have Skills:

1) 8+ years of hands-on technical working experience with Cloud Environments such as GCP, AWS, Azure, etc.

2) 3+ years' Terraform coding experience

3) 1-2 years of hands-on cloud operations and administration experience with GCP

4) 5+ years’ technical working experience in an Infrastructure Operations, DevOps or Cloud Engineering Operations type of role

5) 5+ years’ hands-on technical working experience with development/scripting languages, container-based technologies, config management tools, container-based technologies, CI/CD tools, and Infrastructure as Code

Nice-To-Have Skills:

3) GCNV experience

4) GCS experience

Education:

  • Bachelor (equivalent or higher) degree in computer science or engineering/mathematics discipline

Best VS. Average Candidate:

**Best is someone who started as DevOps and progressed into a Senior Cloud Engineer with recent hands-on GCP experience;
