Job summary

Questrade is hiring a Senior Fullstack API Engineer to design and build the gateway to our ecosystem, delivering secure, production-grade integrations from documentation to sandbox onboarding.

Take ownership of DX and API platforms, including self-serve developer portals, API documentation, and MCP servers. Bring deep API discipline across frontend and backend, with a focus on scalable, secure APIs and developer experiences.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong background in modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Next.js) and backend languages (e.g., Node.js, Go, Python, Java).
  • Deep understanding of RESTful API design, GraphQL, OpenAPI/Swagger.
  • Experience with API Gateways like Apigee or Kong/AWS API Gateway.
  • Experience implementing OAuth 2.0 / OIDC, token management, API Key validation.

Responsibilities

  • Own the frontend and backend of the self-serve Developer Portal, including API sandbox and testing tools.
  • Design, implement, and maintain API proxies and policies using Apigee; manage versioning and deprecation of public APIs.
  • Implement and maintain secure authentication/authorization (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, API Keys, Scopes).
  • Collaborate to define API specs and ensure a world-class developer onboarding flow.

We’re looking for our next Senior Fullstack API Engineer. Could It Be You?At Questrade, we are revolutionizing how Canadians manage their wealth by offering advanced trading platforms, and cutting-edge technology. We are looking for a product-minded Senior Fullstack Engineer to join our API Platform team. In this role, you will design and build the gateway to our entire ecosystem. You will be responsible for the end-to-end journey of external developers and partners—from the moment they read our documentation to their first successful API call in our sandbox, all the way to secure, production-grade integrations.This is a comprehensive role requiring deep full-stack engineering discipline. You will bridge the gap between frontend user experience (building self-serve developer portals and SDKs) and backend systems engineering (API gateways, security protocols, and high-performance routing).

  • Developer Experience (DX): Own the frontend and backend of our self-serve Developer Portal, ensuring a frictionless onboarding journey. Build realistic API sandbox environments and interactive testing tools. Collaborate with Technical Writers and Developer Advocates to generate, maintain, and automate SDKs and interactive API documentation.
  • Scaling Public, Partner APIs \& MCP: Design, implement, and maintain API proxies and policies using Apigee, ensuring adherence to SaaS API standards. Build tooling and workflows for strategic partners to certify their integrations. Design and maintain our Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and external API surfaces. Manage the versioning, deprecation, and backward compatibility of our public APIs.
  • API Identity \& Access: Implement and maintain secure authentication and authorization protocols (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, API Keys, and Scopes). Collaborate with DevSecOps to implement robust rate-limiting, throttling, and consumer access management policies. Work closely with Identity Engineers to ensure developer credentials are secure yet simple to manage.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with DX Engineers, API Product Engineers, Tech Leads, and SecOps to define API specs, ensuring a world-class developer onboarding flow.

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Experience: 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong background in modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Next.js) and backend languages (e.g., Node.js, Go, Python, or Java).
  • API Expertise: Deep understanding of RESTful API design, GraphQL, and OpenAPI/Swagger specifications. Hands-on experience managing APIs via Apigee (or similar API Gateways like Kong/AWS API Gateway).
  • Security \& Identity: Proven experience implementing OAuth 2.0 / OIDC, token management, and custom API Key validation.
  • Modern Paradigms: Exposure to or strong interest in Model Context Protocol (MCP) and building integrations optimized for LLMs/AI agents.
  • Mindset: Developer-first empathy with a passion for building clean interfaces and a systems-thinking approach to API lifecycle management.
Compensation Information:
  • Base salary range: $110,000 - $140,000
  • The final compensation package will be commensurate with the successful candidate's experience, skills, and geographic location (Canada). It includes a comprehensive benefits plan and a competitive incentive (bonus) program for Full-Time Permanent roles.
