Overview

The Government of Alberta is recruiting a Senior Fisheries Biologist for Fort McMurray, Alberta. This permanent, full-time role (36.25 hours per week) reports to the Northeast Regional Fisheries Manager and supports the stewardship of fish populations and habitats, stakeholder engagement, and leadership within a professional team.

Responsibilities
  • Stewardship of fish populations and habitats.
  • Fish population monitoring and assessment.
  • Engage with stakeholders, First Nations and Métis Communities.
  • Team leadership, Occupational Health and Safety work planning, and communication.
  • Design and implement fish population assessment and monitoring programs and contribute to the development of fish management objectives.
  • Collaborate on multi-year regional and provincial fisheries monitoring plans and develop scientifically rigorous approaches to assess fish population status and predict outcomes of management actions and land use activities.
  • Lead and support provincial and regional communication and engagement strategies related to species conservation and recovery.
  • Provide expert advice to ensure fisheries stewardship objectives are considered in regulatory processes and legislation.
  • Review license applications for conditional authorization aligned with statutory responsibilities.
  • Lead recruitment, onboarding, supervision, training, and professional development of a team of biologists, technicians, and seasonal staff.
  • Lead and support the Branch Occupational Health and Safety program including hazard assessment, inspections, incident reporting, training, and status reporting to management.
  • Participate in a dynamic Northeast Region team offering experience and development opportunities.
Qualifications

Requirements:

  • University degree in conservation biology, ecology, zoology, fisheries or wildlife management, natural resource management, or related field.
  • 6 years of experience in fisheries management.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license or equivalent.

Equivalency:

  • A related two-year diploma plus 8 years related experience.
  • Additional related education considered in lieu of experience on a one-for-one basis.

Assets:

  • Supervisory experience.
  • Proficient in MS Office; strong data analysis, modeling, statistical tools, GIS, and database management.
  • Experience in writing and presenting technical reports related to natural resource issues.
  • Knowledge of relevant provincial and federal legislation (e.g., Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Fisheries Act, Water Act, Land Stewardship Act, OH&S Act and regulations).
  • Skill in operating off-highway vehicles, boats, fisheries equipment, and firearms for management and sampling.

Minimum recruitment standards: This full-time permanent position is based in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The work schedule is Monday to Friday from 8:15 AM to 4:30 PM (36.25 hours/week); occasional overtime and field travel within the Northeast Region are required.

Benefits and Work Environment

Fort McMurray Attraction Bonus: A one-time payment equal to 25% of base pay at start of employment, disbursed quarterly over the first year.

Fort McMurray Allowance: Eligible employees receive an additional $478.17 per bi-weekly pay period.
