The Ontario Fire Department's Fire Prevention Bureau is searching for a qualified individual interested in furthering their career in the field of fire prevention / fire safety as a Senior Fire Safety Specialist. The Senior Fire Safety Specialist position performs inspection and enforcement work on commercial, industrial, residential, state-regulated and public assembly buildings to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local codes and regulations governing fire and life safety. In addition, the Senior Fire Safety Specialist is responsible for independently resolving issues of advanced complexity, assisting Fire Safety Specialists with large and complex projects, and may act as project manager for small, less complex projects.
The ideal candidate for the Senior Fire Safety Specialist position will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, thrive in a fast-paced work environment, and demonstrate a passion for collaborating on largescale development projects. The successful candidate will embody the Department's mission and vision as well as the qualities of a "Five Tool Player" - Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant - and the values of the City's Approach to Public Service - Commitment to the Community, Excellence through Teamwork, and Doing the Right Thing the Right Way.
The Following Procedures Will Apply
- The Eligibility List will consist of both internal and external applicants who meet the qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.
- The City of Ontario reserves the right, if necessary, to accept only the first one hundred (100) applications from applicants that meet the qualification guidelines below.
- Completed applications will be reviewed and only qualified applicants whose qualifications best meet or exceed the requirements of the position and needs of the City will be invited to participate further in the selection process.
The Ontario Fire Department
As the third largest city in San Bernardino County, Ontario encompasses over 50 square miles and is home to over 185,000 residents. Ontario Fire Department serves these residents from 11 strategically located fire stations, including the Ontario International Airport fire station, with a daily staffing level of 74 sworn firefighters. These fire stations house ten 4-person paramedic engine companies, four 4-person truck companies, a 8-person ARFF station, a 2-person alternate transport vehicle, 2 fire investigators, and 2 battalion chiefs.
Ontario Fire Department has 265 personnel comprised of 213 sworn firefighters and 52 professional staff members serving our community across seven bureaus – Administrative Services, EMS, Fire Prevention, Operations, Personnel & Professional Standards, Support Services, and Training & Professional Development.

The Fire Prevention Bureau is committed to Community Risk Reduction and is operated in a business-like manner, providing responsive customer-friendly service. The Bureau utilizes various databases in conjunction with other city departments to identify the most hazardous occupancies in the City. Periodic inspections are then conducted to ensure code compliance. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is responsible for developing and implementing programs and policies that prevent or reduce the magnitude of emergency occurrences, such as loss of life and property, or environmental damage.
