We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Financial Reporting Analyst to join our Accounting & Finance team. Reporting to the Manager of Financial Reporting, the Senior Financial Reporting Analyst will be instrumental in analyzing financial data, preparing key financial reports, assessing technical accounting matters and providing actionable insights. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the accuracy and reliability of financial information.

Financial Reporting

  • Develop a deep understanding of Strathcona’s operations and financial drivers to prepare insightful quarterly balance sheet and income statement variance analyses.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual financial statements in compliance with IFRS, as well as the accompanying MD&A and AIF.
  • Serve as a Workiva power-user, leveraging the platform to streamline reporting and ensure consistency in external filings
  • Manage complex accounting areas such as lease accounting, asset impairments, and asset retirement obligations, including calculating impacts and preparing the necessary journal entries.
  • Research and document technical accounting issues by writing high-quality position papers to support the chosen accounting treatment for complex or non-standard transactions.
  • Act as a key liaison with external auditors during quarterly reviews and the annual audit. Prepare audit working papers, explain account fluctuations, and ensure all auditor requests are met promptly.
  • Assist in special projects as required, such as financial system upgrades, hierarchy management, process improvement initiatives, or implementation of new accounting standards.
  • Contribute to finance integration for acquisitions, including preparing purchase price allocation schedules and integrating acquired entities’ financial data into Strathcona’s reporting.

Internal Controls

  • Maintain thorough documentation of Strathcona’s internal control framework. Update process flowcharts and control narratives to reflect current practices and organizational changes.
  • Plan and execute internal control test plans.
  • Collaborate with process owners to remediate control deficienciesby developing and implementing action plans.
  • Act as a key contact for external consultants and auditors assessing our internal controls. Provide requested evidence of controls and explain the company’s control processes.

Qualifications / Skills

  • CPA designation is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of post-designation experience in financial reporting, preferably within the oil and gas sector or related industries.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement new accounting standards.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with advanced working knowledge of Excel.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with Q-byte and / or Workiva is considered an asset.

  • Based at Strathcona’s head office in downtown Calgary, Alberta.
