Job description
Overview

The Senior Financial Analyst Tax ("SFA Tax") is a key member of the Unilever North America tax team reporting to the Associate Director, NA Tax Compliance. The SFA Tax role is primarily responsible for the delivery of statutory requirements for Canadian corporate taxes (all jurisdictions), as well as all tax accounting and reporting, including working with third-party service providers, under the supervision of the Associate Director, NA Tax Compliance.

The SFA Tax role also supports the Associate Director, NA Tax Compliance in the indirect tax area, coordinating government indirect tax audits at the federal and provincial levels, working with IT on system changes to comply with legislative/operational changes, and providing business support on indirect tax issues. This role also manages the US and CA withholding tax compliance and reporting process for the combined North America region in coordination with the NA US International Tax Team. The SFA Tax role is part of the global Unilever Tax Organization and requires collaboration with Unilever tax and non-tax colleagues around the world.

A high-caliber individual is sought who would be capable of performing the following functions.

Responsibilities
  • Delivery of annual Corporate Income Tax filings for Canada, working with third-party service providers, conducting preliminary reviews, and researching filing positions under the supervision of the Associate Director, NA Tax Compliance. The SFA Tax also reviews tax assessments and prepares tax instalments.
  • Responsible for all Canada tax accounting and reporting work (including coordinating with third-party service providers, training of the business, preliminary review of quarter and year-end tax provisions and tax forecasting) under the supervision of the Associate Director, NA Tax Compliance.
  • Maintain tax general ledger accounts for the Unilever Canada business, including preparation of entries and reconciliations.
  • Support the indirect tax area by coordinating audits with Federal and Provincial tax authorities and liaising with tax auditors. Review indirect tax reassessments and payments/refunds of HST/GST/QST/PST, interest, and penalties, as required.
  • Responsible for North America withholding tax compliance and reporting processes, including the review of the T4ANR (Canada) and Form 1042 (US) annual returns. Manage queries related to withholding tax compliance requirements from external and internal stakeholders.
  • Support various ad-hoc Canada tax projects as required, including work related to acquisitions/disposals, process improvements, internal projects, and indirect tax recovery projects.
Requirements
  • Strong accounting knowledge, sound business acumen, superior time management, and good organizational skills.
  • CPA designation (or at final levels) preferred.
  • Education: University degree in a related discipline.
  • Experience: 2-5 years of work experience in Finance, General Accounting and/or Tax (experience with corporate tax, indirect tax, and/or withholding tax is considered an asset).
