The Department of Finance has the mandate to provide leadership and direction to the public service in all areas of finance and human resource management. This mandate includes negotiating major financial arrangements with the federal government, providing analysis and advice to the Financial Management Board, and ensuring that financial and information resources are managed effectively, efficiently and economically. This mandate also includes the recruitment and retention of a competent public service that is representative of the people it serves and the development of programs and services that effectively serve the human resource needs of the public service.

Join our team as a Senior Finance Officer in Yellowknife!

Are you a finance professional looking for a challenging and rewarding opportunity? The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is seeking a motivated Senior Finance Officer to play a key role in our Headquarters Shared Services Center.

Your key responsibilities:

  1. Supervise a team responsible for processing accounts payable, accounts receivable, journal entries and payroll
  2. Ensure compliance with the Financial Administrative Act (FAA) and GNWT policies.
  3. Provide guidance and support to client departments on financial matters.
  4. Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement best practices.
  5. Prepare financial reports and reconciliations.

What you need to succeed:

  1. Solid understanding of GAAP and ERP systems.
  2. Demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate a team.
  3. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  4. Excellent communications and interpersonal skills.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

- A relevant undergraduate degree, one year of experience supervising, and one of the following:

  1. Completion of four competencies of the Canadian CPA Professional Education Program with three (3) years accounting experience
  2. Completion of the Canadian Payroll Association-s Certified Payroll Manager Certificate (CPM), with three (3) years directly related experience
  3. Completion of the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist Designation with three (3) years directly related experience
