Job description

Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Strathcona Resources Ltd. is one of North America’s fastest growing pure play heavy oil producers with operations focused on thermal oil and enhanced oil recovery near the Cold Lake and Lloydminster regions of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Strathcona is committed to doing business the right way, guided by our core values: Integrity, Energy, and Intelligence. These values define who we are as a company, how we work together, and how we make decisions: We prioritize respect, accountability, and collaboration. That means everyone can shape and strengthen our culture and drive results in meaningful ways. Our people bring energy and curiosity to solve problems and deliver results. Be part of a team where performance, collaboration, and innovation come together to drive success.

We are actively seeking a Senior Facilities Engineer to join our Cold Lake team. Working with the Orion Facilities Engineering Team, you will own SAGD growth projects from scoping through detailed design, construction and commissioning, drive technical scope, and ensure safe execution and code and regulatory compliance. The role suits a self-starter and critical thinker who challenges a design, an estimate or a schedule when justified. This position is based out of our Calgary Head Office; however, regular travel to the Orion site will be required (~10% of time).

Responsibilities
  • Lead the engineering and design efforts for SAGD Thermal Facility projects, from concept selection through detailed design.
  • Design and construction of various types of pipelines and flowlines.
  • Manage facility engineering projects from scoping to commissioning, owning the schedule, budget and technical outcome.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including H&S, E&R, Development, Production, Operations, Drilling, Completions, and Earthworks Construction.
  • Direct third-party engineering and construction contractors, setting design, cost and execution expectations and holding them accountable.
  • Prepare Project Charters, Project Execution Plans, scopes of work and other documents to frame project success.
  • Development and maintenance of cost estimates, cost forecasts and schedules, with variances identified and explained early.
  • Ensure engineering contractors prepare all construction documents, and review them for completeness, accuracy and constructability.
  • Participate in 3D model reviews and Process Hazard Analysis (e.g., What-if, Risk Assessment, HAZOP, etc.).
  • Ensure compliance of engineering deliverables with project specifications and all applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Monitor and enforce the corporate Health, Safety, Environment, and Regulatory requirements.
  • Facilitate, participate and support in shop fabrication walkdowns and pre-commissioning activities.
  • Review shop inspection and field construction reports, and liaise with the engineering contractor for timely resolution of requests for information, non-conformances, and preventative and corrective actions.
  • Facilitate and participate in system walkdowns, pre-startup safety reviews (PSSRs) and handover to Operations.
  • Assist in monitoring and surveillance of pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for operations and maintenance as required.
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in a Project Engineer/Manager or related role in the Oil and Gas industry, including projects delivered from scoping through commissioning.
  • Proven track record managing engineering and construction contractors.
  • P.Eng. registered with APEGA or eligible for registration; PMP and/or Asset Certified an asset.
  • Direct SAGD experience, including Alberta regulatory requirements for thermal facilities and infrastructure.
  • Design, installation and startup of SAGD facilities and infrastructure, including pipelines.
  • Familiar with material procurement and construction contract execution.
  • Familiar with brownfield facility construction and tie-ins to live operating systems.
  • Self-starter who takes an ambiguous scope, builds the plan and moves it forward without close direction.
  • Critical thinker who interrogates designs, estimates and contractor claims, and can defend a recommendation with data.

Great things aren’t done by one person, they’re done by a team. We believe meaningful results come from people with unwavering commitment to integrity, energy, and intelligence – how we show up matters just as much as what we deliver. We value our work, our communities, and our commitments – but most of all, we value the team of people who make what we do possible.
