Job summary

EllisDon in Mississauga, Ontario, seeks a senior estimator to lead bid processes for large civil transportation projects. You will define scope, manage risk, organize work, and coordinate executive reviews with a focus on accurate, timely submissions.

The role requires 12+ years in civil construction and 5+ years in estimating, with CM/hard-bid/design-build experience and strong budgeting and leadership skills.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of civil construction experience with a focus on transportation infrastructure (roads, bridges, rail).
• 5+ years of estimating experience.
• Project Management and Field Experience is an asset.
• Good communication and documentation skills.
• Develop and manage budgets.
• Well‑developed interpersonal customer service and relationship‑building skills.

Job description

Responsibilities

• Confidently lead a team through the completion of a bid process for larger and complicated projects, including scope definition, risk profiling, division of work among team members, and facilitating executive review meetings.
• Review drawings and tender documents to understand scope of work and submission requirements.
• Assemble accurate, timely, and well‑organized estimates, including hard‑bid, construction management, and design‑build scenarios.
• Prepare reports and lead executive bid review meetings.
• Review schedule for accuracy and determine production rates.
• Contact subcontractors and vendors for specific divisions to obtain external pricing.
• Negotiate subcontractor and vendor pricing.
• Resolve cost discrepancies by collecting and analyzing information.
• Organize sub‑contractor quotes when the bid is successful, re‑write binders, and assist the buy‑out process.
• Distribute sub‑trade quotes to personnel, flag areas of concern, and coordinate with management to manage risk within the bid price.
• Recognize and evaluate risks within each specific project and maintain a risk registry.
• Maintain databases of labour rates, material pricing, and project costs for future reference.
• Support the project handover process to the Project Delivery/Operation teams; assist with project material procurements when requested.
• Work independently and as a team member.
• Oversee pre‑qualification submissions, RFQs, and RFIs.
• Plan and prepare construction schedules and milestones.
• Mentor and develop junior staff within the estimating department.
• Maintain quality service by following organization standards.
• Document and communicate actions, irregularities, and continuing bid needs to ensure continuity among corporate, division, and local work teams.
• Determine bidding standards to improve estimating bid quality and reduce estimating time.

Qualifications

• Degree or Diploma in Engineering or Construction.
• 12+ years of civil construction experience with a focus on transportation infrastructure (roads, bridges, rail).
• 5+ years of estimating experience.
• Project Management and Field Experience is an asset.
• Good communication and documentation skills.
• Develop and manage budgets.
• Familiarity with B2W Software would be considered an asset.
• Well‑developed interpersonal customer service and relationship‑building skills.
• Good oral and written English‑language skills.
• Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Self‑motivated, energetic, and reliable with a positive disposition.
• Ability to work under pressure and prioritize work effectively.
