Job description

The role of the Senior Risk Assessor in the Brownfield Assessment and Development service group is to strengthen and expand MEMS’s services with a focus on technical expertise in the provision of contaminated sites assessment and complex risk assessment projects (human and ecological) to operating and non-operating facilities across western Canada.

This is a senior role requiring high-quality project execution, with an emphasis on building the skill sets within MEMS that create and foster long-term client relationships, generate repeat business, and expand services within a culture that promotes career growth of junior and intermediate employees within the service group.

The position is primarily office-based in a demanding consultative environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure human health and ecological risk assessment practice is current with internal and external policies.
  • Lead complex risk assessment projects.
  • Provide technical support and senior review for complex risk assessment projects.
  • Actively lead and delegate continual improvement of process and policies related to risk assessment within the service group.
  • Contribute to, implement, and maintain client business growth plans, creating conditions for long-term repeat business.
  • Promote career development and training opportunities for staff to align individual careers with organizational opportunities.
  • Collaborate with key staff, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Provide technical support to other MEMS disciplines, including hydrogeology, site assessment, and remediation.
Education and Experience:
  • Minimum ten (10) years of directly related experience as an Environmental Risk Assessment professional, preferably in a consulting environment.
  • Detailed understanding of site-specific risk assessment procedures and the basis for risk-based environmental guidelines.
  • Experience completing site-specific risk assessments and developing risk-based remedial objectives for sites of intermediate to significant complexity with limited supervision.
  • Proven track record of managing and maintaining client relationships.
  • Ability to build clear and appropriate conceptual site models from diverse datasets and mentor others in this skill.
  • Advanced understanding of Alberta Tier 1 and Tier 2 guidelines or equivalent documents from other jurisdictions.
  • Advanced knowledge of key risk assessment skills, including hydrogeology, soil science, environmental chemistry, contaminant transport, modeling, and toxicity.
  • Experience developing risk-based site management strategies is an asset.
  • Experience with contaminant transport modeling is an asset.
  • Eligibility for membership in a relevant professional organization.
  • Ability to meet site access requirements, including pre-access drug, alcohol, and fitness testing.
  • Possess a valid, non-GDL Class 5 Driver's license.
Other Knowledge and Skills:
  • Advanced knowledge of provincial and federal legislation related to environmental risk assessment.
  • Ability to apply Alberta Tier 1 and Tier 2 guidelines or similar standards from other jurisdictions.
  • Strong understanding of the upstream and downstream oil and gas industry, oil sands, and industrial environmental sectors.
  • Willingness to apply pragmatic, outcome-based, and innovative approaches.
  • Excellent technical expertise for challenging projects.
  • Strong project management, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of numerical modeling.
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and effective in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Good mentoring skills and ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
Working Conditions:
  • Office environment with prolonged sitting and computer use.
  • Occasional long hours, travel, and outside work hours may be required.

MEMS Pay Transparency: British Columbia

Salary Range: BC - $95,000 - $147,000. Final compensation based on education, experience, and location.
