Your Opportunity

With a focus on local projects, the successful candidate will support a diverse team of environmental professionals providing services to multiple sectors (e.g., infrastructure, mining, oil and gas, and power). Key project responsibilities include conducting environmental monitoring in a fast-paced, client-focused environment. The ideal candidate will possess a range of skills; experience in environmental monitoring is necessary and knowledge of various environmental disciplines is beneficial. Environmental professionals in this position will work on a variety of environmental assessment, permitting, and compliance projects throughout Saskatchewan. Project specific training as well as Client required training will be provided.

The work described below requires an experienced senior professional who consistently applies advanced practical knowledge to deliver results. The Senior Environmental Monitor will exercise independent judgment to resolve complex problems, analyze issues, interpret information, and select methods and solutions to resolve problems. Additionally, the individual will handle deviations from standard practices; typically resolve complex problems and/or problems where precedent may be limited.

Your Key Responsibilities

1. Providing environmental monitoring services during the construction, maintenance and/or reclamation phases of projects. This may include observing and reporting on how projects are conforming with their compliance obligations regarding environmental effects and the development of recommendations for timely and effective mitigations.
2. Review and communicate regulatory permitting conditions to contractors.
3. Conducting pre-construction surveys for nesting migratory birds, as well as for wildlife and plant species at risk.
4. Marking (e.g., flagging/staking) of wetland boundaries.
5. Review of Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) plans as well as the installation and effectiveness monitoring of applied ESC measures.
6. Completing post-monitoring data management and reporting such as data uploads, commitments tracking, data analysis and interpretation, report preparation (e.g., daily field reports and As-Builts), and other Project related tasks.
7. Complying with health and safety and quality management protocols.
8. Interacting and communicating effectively with multi-disciplinary teams, regulators, clients, construction inspectors, subconsultants, and contractors.
9. Leadership and guidance of intermediate and junior staff.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

1. Understanding of environmental mitigations for soils, aquatic habitats (e.g., wetlands, waterbodies, watercourses), migratory birds, species at risk, and vegetation.
2. Knowledge of biophysical and/or preconstruction survey types.
3. Experience with wildlife and/or plant identification is considered an asset.
4. Working knowledge of federal and provincial environmental assessment legislation.
5. Willingness and ability to travel and work outdoors.
6. Strong technical writing and organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.
7. Excellent interpersonal skills.
8. Ownership and initiative.
9. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
10. Valid Saskatchewan Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract.

Education and Experience

Diploma or degree in environmental engineering technology or related discipline (e.g., biology, environmental studies). Minimum of seven years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience. Possess qualifications consistent with the Saskatchewan Petroleum Industry/Government Environment Committee Guideline (SPIGEC) No. 6 (2002) for Field Environmental Monitors.

The successful candidate will primarily engage in field work, with occasional office-based tasks. Travel (primarily within Saskatchewan) will be required for field work and may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
