Base pay range
CA$106,174.00/yr - CA$162,616.00/yr

The City's Waste & Recycling Services (WRS) provides residential and commercial waste collection, disposal and recycling services for The City of Calgary. The Disposal & Processing Services (DPS) division of WRS operates three active waste management facilities (WMFs) and manages five closed landfill sites. As a Senior Environmental Engineer, you will ensure the City's ability to maintain compliance with regulatory obligations at active WMFs and closed landfills. Primary duties include:
- Provide regulatory and remediation subject matter expertise (SME) support for WRS capital projects and Landfill Operations, including liaising with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas.
- Develop and implement programs and projects to assess environmental impacts from City active WMFs and closed landfills, including coordination and monitoring of consultants and the engagement of internal and external interest holders.
- Implement post-closure care plans for the closed landfill sites and update the plans as required.
- Provide environmental leadership and strategic direction, supporting environmental policy development for City landfills aimed at improving environmental performance and sustainability.
- Review and provide comments on development applications and any associated environmental reports for lands/properties which fall within the setbacks of both active WMFs and closed landfills to determine suitability of the proposed use within the limitations defined by the Municipal Government Act.
- Create and provide senior review of engineering and regulatory documentation (e.g. reports, memos, correspondence, procedures).
- Coach and develop junior engineering staff.
Qualifications
- A degree in Engineering and at least 8 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work. - A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required.
- Strong technical and regulatory knowledge is essential, especially related to the environmental management of landfills in Alberta.
- Experience in budgeting, performance management, cost/benefit and risk analysis is also valued.
- Success in this position requires strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to lead change; ability to effectively communicate on technical, operational and business issues to multiple audiences; critical thinking, problem solving and decision making; strong project management skills, with demonstrated ability to manage staff to achieve the goals of multidimensional work programs.
