HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi‑autogenous grinding and flotation. Located approximately 17 kilometers west of Logan Lake and about 50 kilometers southwest of Kamloops in British Columbia, the surrounding areas of HVC have an abundant offering of outdoor experiences.

Role Overview

Teck is a leading Canadian resource company focused on responsibly providing the metals essential for global development and the energy transition while caring for the people, communities and land that we love.

Embrace Courageous Safety Leadership (CSL): At Teck, safety is a core value, central to our work culture. Through programs like CSL, we empower every employee to be a safety leader, fostering a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risks. As part of the team, you will contribute to sustaining this safety‑first environment, where speaking up and driving positive change are not just encouraged but expected.

Reporting to the Superintendent Geotechnical, the Senior Supervisor, Mine Geotechnical is the chief engineer responsible for managing the Mine Geotechnical program at Highland Valley Copper, the largest Canadian open‑pit copper mine. This includes geotechnical aspects related to the open pits and rock storage facilities design through to execution, pit expansions, slope monitoring, dewatering and depressurization activities, geotechnical investigation programs and design compliance.

To be successful, we are looking for someone with excellent interpersonal skills and proven experience in overseeing and coordinating multiple internal resources and external contractors in projects. The candidate must have strong analytical and problem‑solving skills and be able to develop and communicate practical recommendations to mine management, mine planners and operations personnel. This role requires a motivated self‑starter, who can multi‑task effectively and work collaboratively with others in a technical, team‑based environment. Demonstrated experience with project management and training in geotechnical engineering is required; exposure to mine planning will be considered an asset.

You will have the opportunity to contribute to a range of engineering design, management and projects in a world‑class operation. There will be abundant opportunities to grow your knowledge base and apply your site‑based geotechnical skills and share your expertise with a variety of Teck mine sites, and to facilitate periodic Geotechnical Review Boards. Both field and office work will be required as part of the role.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with management, technical and operational staff
  • Supervise and provide guidance to senior and intermediate geotechnical engineers
  • Oversee the construction and maintenance of dewatering well installations required for the Mine Life Extension pushback
  • Coordinate and review work by external geotechnical consultants to ensure it is fit for purpose and meets specifications, standards, and codes
  • Perform regular Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) inspections
  • Perform regular Life of Asset, budgeting and cost reviews
  • Provide sound geotechnical guidance to site and various consultants for design and design implementation activities
  • Manage geotechnical risk and risk mitigation efforts
  • Communicate geotechnical risks and solutions in a safety sensitive, operational environment
  • Play an active role in Teck’s geotechnical community of practice through ongoing collaboration with geotechnical personnel at other Teck operations and corporate engineering group
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geological or Geotechnical Engineering
  • Registered, or eligible to register, with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC) as a P. Eng.
  • Minimum ten (10) years mining industry experience, including geotechnical experience in an open pit environment
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and relevant geotechnical software, such as GeoExplorer, Vulcan, AutoCAD, Slide, Dips, Swedge, RocFall, and Phase2/RS2 an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license
