Job summary

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering required; P.Eng. eligible with APEGA preferred.
• 10+ years in electric utility, with focus on power system modelling, PDUP creation, review and validation.
• Strong knowledge of Alberta's regulatory framework, tariffs, reliability standards, and transmission facilities.
• Proficiency with power system study tools, especially PSS/E for steady-state, dynamic, and EMT studies.

Responsibilities

• Lead independent technical reviews and validation of power system models used in studies.
• Validate model logic, data sources, methodologies, and results for accuracy and robustness.
• Review and validate generator, plant, and network static and dynamic models and parameterization.
• Validate line impedances, thermal ratings, transformer parameters, tap changers, phase shifters, and protection interfaces.
• Assess model convergence, numerical stability, and sensitivity to parameter variations.
• Interpret results and communicate implications, risks, and uncertainties to stakeholders.
• Mentor engineers on best practices and participate in cross‑functional groups.

Job Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Project Engineering, JSG's client is seeking a Senior Engineer, Model Validation to review and validate power system models and Project Data Update Packages (PDUPs).

Reporting to the Manager, Project Engineering, JSG's client is seeking a Senior Engineer, Model Validation to review and validate power system models and Project Data Update Packages (PDUPs). In this role, you will serve as a subject matter expert and key resource for model validation activities. You will also provide coaching and mentorship through internal training, the development of guidelines and checklists, and the improvement and streamlining of internal processes. You will be accountable for PDUP validation processes to help ensure the accuracy and consistency of models submitted for interconnection studies. You will play a critical role in strengthening technical capabilities in power system studies and supporting the timely, high-quality delivery of project deliverables. You will work closely with Lead Engineers within the team, as well as Senior and Principal Engineers across JSG's client, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on matters related to project modelling. Must Haves

• Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Registered as, or eligible to become, a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA.
• 10+ years of engineering experience in the electric utility industry, with a strong focus on power system modelling and analysis, including PDUP creation, review, and validation.
• Comprehensive understanding of Alberta's electricity-sector regulatory framework, applicable tariffs, reliability standards, and transmission facilities.
• Proficiency with power system study tools, with strong knowledge of PSS®E-based steady-state and dynamic studies, as well as electromagnetic transient studies for interconnection purposes.

Nice To Haves

• Experience developing and validating power system models for both Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) and phasor-domain simulations.
• Experience in transmission planning, power system operations, and customer access studies.

Accountabilities Include, But Are Not Limited To

• Lead independent technical reviews and validation of project models used in power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit, dynamic, and stability studies.
• Validate model logic, assumptions, data sources, methodologies, and results for accuracy, robustness, and suitability for their intended use.
• Review and validate generator, plant, and network static and dynamic models, including parameterization and control representations.
• Validate line impedances (R, X, B), thermal ratings, seasonal limits, transformer parameters including impedances, tap changers, phase shifters, and grounding, as well as substation configurations, breaker models, bus arrangements, and protection interfaces as required.
• Assess model convergence, numerical stability, and sensitivity to parameter variations.
• Interpret modelling results and clearly communicate implications, risks, sensitivities, and uncertainties to market participants and other stakeholders.
• Identify and mitigate model-related risks, escalating material issues that could impact project or system decisions to the appropriate internal and external teams.
• Establish and apply structured model validation frameworks, checklists, and peer-review protocols.
• Support the development and validation of interconnection study cases.
• Mentor engineers and reviewers on best practices for power system and transmission modelling.
• Participate in cross-functional technical groups and share best practices and technical information with the Project Engineering team.
