Job Description Summary
This role involves designing plant electric power distribution systems (EPDS), including nuclear (NI), turbine island (TI), balance of plant (BOP), and interfaces to switchyard and grid. The scope covers safety-related (S-R), Safety Class 1 (SC1), augmented quality (SC2 and SC3), and nonsafety-related (NSR) systems for advanced nuclear reactors like BWRX-300 and Natrium. The focus is on electrical systems analysis, technical leadership, and process ownership.
Essential Responsibilities
- Develop and evaluate engineering solutions for EPDS.
- Apply electrical theory, modeling, and simulation to design systems with desired behaviors, power flow balance, optimization, and coordination across voltage levels.
- Design AC and DC electrical systems, including generators, transformers, switchgear, relays, panels, wiring, grounding, and protection systems.
- Support grid connection applications and design protection/control system components.
- Lead or support design processes from FEED to detailed final design, maintaining data-centric documentation and models.
- Collaborate across disciplines to meet performance and reliability goals using FMEA, PRA, and modern techniques.
- Support regulatory certification, procurement, and supplier oversight, ensuring compliance and safety.
- Manage testing, inspections, and acceptance criteria with suppliers.
- Establish relationships with project teams, suppliers, and stakeholders.
- Perform reviews, verification, and optimization studies.
- Develop work plans, monitor progress, and ensure deliverables meet scope, budget, and schedule.
- Promote continuous improvement and safety culture, providing leadership and mentorship.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's in Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear Engineering, or related field.
- 10+ years in high-reliability industries (nuclear, power, marine, etc.) with experience in design, specifications, and procurement using digital tools.
- 10+ years applying standards like IEEE, IEC, or NFPA relevant to electrical power systems.
- 10+ years working with heavy electrical equipment, modeling, and qualification processes.
- Proficiency in PC software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and CAD tools.
- 7+ years experience with electrical system simulation tools like ETAP.
- 5+ years experience with P&C design and grid interface in power plants.
- Professional Engineering Designation (P.Eng) in Ontario.
Desired Characteristics
- Master’s degree and PE certification preferred.
- PMP certification, Ontario PEO license advantageous.
- Experience with equipment qualification testing and digital engineering tools.
- Knowledge of NERC/NPCC standards, relay configuration, and modern collaboration tools.
- Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, adapt, and continuously learn.
