JOB PURPOSE
As a key part of the growing Energy Solutions, Building Performance and Sustainability team, the Senior Energy Engineer is responsible for overseeing and delivering energy-engineering driven solutions for various energy studies and proposals. Reporting into the Director, Building Performance Engineering, the Senior Energy Engineer takes a lead role in conceptualizing, developing, and delivering expert energy-engineering driven solutions for a wide range of energy studies and proposals, with a focus on complex, investment-grade analyses.
This role requires flexibility in responding to customer and corporate needs, providing leadership and expertise in complex energy-engineering solutions. The Senior Energy Engineer leads multiple system analyses and provides energy engineering leadership and expertise for energy studies, Enervolve Climate Action Plan (eCAP) reports, energy performance contracting projects, multidisciplinary engineering efforts, and technical sales support.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and execute preliminary, detailed, and investment-grade (+ / -5% accuracy) analyses of air-side and hydronic HVAC systems, central utility plant systems (steam, hot water, chilled water), and their interaction with Building Management Systems (BMS), to identify potential operational and efficiency improvements and decarbonization opportunities.
- Develop and utilize tools for replicable and demonstrable analysis and reporting of findings and benefits. Communicate these technical findings, risks and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders through written reports, presentations and digital formats for inclusion in Enervolve study write-ups and technical project development documentation.
- Plan and lead technical investigations, site assessments, and the collection of operational data from customer facilities, existing BMS / BAS, technical documentation, and utility information to establish a comprehensive and accurate body of knowledge for delivering investment-grade energy engineering solutions.
- Execute and manage building optimization strategies and scope development for all ASHRAE Level I, II, and III energy audits / studies, utilizing Blackstone’s ratified energy engineering modeling tools and feasibility study document formats.
- Write, develop, and prepare optimization requirements, strategies, and designs for detailed and investment-grade energy studies, including solicitation and summary of subcontractor pricing, detailed energy, optimization and operational savings calculations, financial and Excel-based energy modeling, economic analysis, energy systems specification, and conceptualization.
- Provide technical and writing support for RFIs, RFPs, and tenders as required.
- Evaluate, document, report, and present proposed project scopes, risks, and benefits to internal executive staff.
- Plan, schedule, organize, direct, and control all costs associated with engineering, consulting, and subcontracting for energy engineering for assigned projects.
- Manage and document, and systematically organize project management files, including correspondence, RFIs, and timelines. Produce high-quality communications adhering to company standards.
- Contribute to the development of project schedules and provide progress updates on a weekly basis or as specified by your direct supervisor.
- Develop and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with customers, consultants, prime contractors, subcontractors, and trade personnel. Attend job progress meetings and provide detailed instructions to consultants and subcontractors, ensuring a clear understanding of project expectations.
- Facilitate communication with team members, subcontractors, and other employees.
- Adhere to safety standards with a high regard for employee and subcontractor safety.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineering staff, fostering their professional development and ensuring the quality of their technical work.
- Stay current with advancements in energy-efficiency and decarbonization technologies, BMS / BAS controls, energy modeling techniques, and relevant codes and standards, sharing knowledge with the team.
- Provide expert technical support during the implementation and commissioning phases of energy projects, assisting with problem-solving and ensuring design intent is met.
- Support interdepartmental, interdivisional, and intercompany goals, directives, and initiatives as endorsed by the Corporation. Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
Education :
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering is required. Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant work experience within the energy services industry. Equivalent related work experience in energy services and energy engineering will be considered.
- P.Eng. designation in the Province of Ontario is required.
- Experience in software-based energy modeling, CEM, and CMVP designations are assets.
Knowledge :
- Engineering design and construction, energy systems (especially hydronic and air-side HVAC systems), Energy Management and Building Management Systems, operation and maintenance, renewable systems, Excel-based energy modeling, advanced methods for data acquisition, report writing, and energy efficiency / GHG reduction solutions development.
- Deep understanding of engineering design principles, building construction practices, and project lifecycle for energy services / performance construction projects.
- Expert knowledge of complex energy systems, including central heating and cooling plants (steam, hot water, chilled water), advanced air-side and hydronic HVAC systems, heat recovery systems and their integrated operation.
- Proficiency with Energy Management and Building Management Systems (BMS / BAS), including control logic, optimization strategies and integration capabilities for energy retrofits.
- Comprehensive understanding of building and equipment O&M best practices and their impact on energy performance.
- Familiarity with various renewable energy systems (e.g., solar PV, geothermal) and their application in building retrofits.
- Proficiency in Excel-based energy modeling, financial analysis (including LCC, ROI), and the development of complex calculation tools.
- Expertise in methods for energy data acquisition, analysis (including regression analysis as shown in M&V plans), and interpretation for identifying and quantifying energy savings.
- Ability in developing innovative and technically sound energy efficiency and GHG reduction solutions, including electrification strategies.
- Understanding of relevant industry codes, standards (ASHRAE, CSA), and regulations, including carbon accounting and reporting.
- Experience in investment-grade energy engineering is essential.
Skills :
- Strong written and verbal communication, presentation, interpersonal, judgment / decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Exceptional report writing skills.
- People management experience is an asset.
