Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to design, develop, test, and maintain firmware for embedded systems built around modern microcontrollers. This role is primarily focused on low-level embedded firmware development, but also includes host-side tooling, CI pipeline support, hardware bring-up, and debugging across the hardware/software boundary.

The ideal candidate is a strong C developer with deep embedded systems experience, practical hardware debugging skills, and the ability to work comfortably from schematic review through firmware implementation, automated testing, and production support.

Note: Candidate must reside in The United States or Canada.

What You\'ll Do
  • Design, implement, test, and maintain embedded firmware for ARM Cortex-M microcontroller-based systems, including low-level drivers, board support packages, application firmware, and debugging workflows.
  • Debug firmware and hardware issues using SWD/JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and other lab equipment.
  • Develop Python-based host tools for device control, diagnostics, manufacturing test, automation, and data collection.
  • Bring up hardware, automated testing setups, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Debug and resolve lab, manufacturing, and field issues.
  • Participate in architecture development, design/code reviews, and doc writing.
What We\'re Looking For
  • Strong professional experience developing embedded firmware in C for microcontroller-based systems, particularly ARM Cortex-M devices.
  • Proficiency with Python for host-side tooling, automation, diagnostics, testing, or firmware update workflows.
  • Comfortable working in a Linux development environment, including command-line tools, build systems, device interfaces, and debugging workflows.
  • Proficiency with git, multi-repository workflows, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Comfort at the hardware/software boundary (reading schematics, using lab equipment, and debugging integration issues).
  • Strong communication and documentation skills, including clear text-based communication for a remote workforce.
  • At least five years experience in a similar role, along with a background in EE, CS, or related technical field.
Nice To Have
  • Prior work with embedded protocols, especially USB, USB-PD, UART, I2C, and SPI.
  • Experience developing USB device firmware (descriptors, enumeration, CDC, DFU, HID, or vendor-specific interfaces).
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing, manufacturing test systems, or production diagnostics.
  • Experience with CMake, Make, GCC/Clang, linker scripts, static analysis, unit testing, integration testing, or pytest.
  • Prior experience with Raspberry Pi RP2040 and RP2350 MCUs.

Indicators of Success

We’re looking for someone who checks off most, but not all, of the boxes listed in “skills and experiences”. It’s more important to us to find candidates who can display indicators of success through skills they have developed and experiences they have been a part of, than to find folks who have “been there, done that”. We want to be part of your development journey, and we’ll learn as much from you as you learn from us.

How We Work

At Magnet Forensics, we take a hybrid-flexible approach to support your productivity and work-life balance. If you’re within a comfortable travel distance to one of our offices, you’ll occasionally join us in person. How often you’ll come in depends on your department and team needs, typically ranging from weekly to monthly. These in-person moments help us build stronger connections, spark new ideas, and celebrate our successes together. Most days, you can choose what works best for you, while staying in tune with your team’s goals.

We’re excited to welcome you to our team and look forward to achieving great things together - both in the office and wherever you work best!

DEDICATE – We put our heart and soul into meeting the needs of our customers and helping them serve the people they protect.
