Job description

Powertech’s High Power Laboratory offers evaluation, verification, and certification testing of medium- and high-voltage products to support manufacturers, power utilities, and other users of electrical equipment. The lab is the largest grid-connected short-circuit testing facility in North America and operates independently of utilities and manufacturers. It has controlled power level capabilities for short-duration single-phase tests up to 400 MVA and three-phase tests up to 1,000 MVA. Test services include load- and fault-interrupting tests, arc-resistance tests, momentary and short-time current tests, and failure-mode and exploratory tests involving applying precisely controlled distribution-level 60 Hz voltage and current to test objects.

Major Responsibilities and Duties (to fulfill major purpose):

* Acts as work leader, provides technical direction to and performs some of the same functions as the Electrical Technician job.

* Assists in writing technical reports and test procedures under the project leadership of an engineer or technologist.

* Assists in the development of new and non-standard test procedures under the project leadership of an engineer or technologist.

* Designs and builds custom testing and measurement equipment under the project leadership of an engineer or technologist.

* Performs repairs and maintenance on test equipment that are beyond the routine scope of the Electrical Technician job.

* Acts as a project leader on internal maintenance and development projects.

* Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job.

Experience, Training and Education (demonstrating requirements):

* Certificate of Technology from an Institute of Technology in Electronics (power/control option), Electrical, Power, Telecommunications, Instrumentation or Automation disciplines with preference given to the discipline directly relating to the position or lab.

* Additional training in the development, setup and operation of high power electrical testing equipment required.

* Three (3) years of related experience working in a lab setting up and performing tests on a variety of electrical power equipment and components.

Additional information

* Certificate/ Diploma in Electrical Technology discipline is required for this role
* General technical knowledge in generation, transmission, maintenance, apparatus, civil structures and/or control functions would be an asset
* Introductory knowledge of project management
* Knowledge of substation and/or distribution equipment would be an asset
* Testing of substation and/or distribution equipment would be an asset
* Drafting skills would be an asset
* Experience High Currents, High Power and/or High Voltage is desirable
* Experience with data acquisition and analysis equipment is highly desirable

* Must be able to work in confined space
* Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
* Must be able to work at heights > 10 feet
* Occasional travel across various locations in BC may be required
* Must have a valid class 5 driver’s license
* Must be able to perform all physical requirements of the role
