Job summary

Stantec is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to act as a Subject Matter Expert in rotating machines and power generation systems, supporting Atlantic Canada and beyond. You will provide technical leadership, peer reviews, and guidance on hydro, thermal, and turbine projects, while mentoring the power team and advancing standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering; Master’s degree is an asset.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with a Canadian Engineering Association; NB and NS eligible.
  • 20+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience in power generation and utility environments.
  • Senior advisory, lead engineer, or SME role experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior technical leadership and advisory services on rotating machines and power generation systems.
  • Lead design reviews, engineering assurance, and ensure compliance with codes and standards.
  • Mentor team members and lead knowledge-sharing within the organization.
  • Act as a trusted technical adviser to clients on studies, refurbishment, and new generation projects.

As part of our Atlantic Region Power team, you will join a multidisciplinary group working across diverse sectors including utility-scale power generation, transmission and distribution, and industrial energy systems.

Stantec is seeking a highly experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in rotating machines and power generation systems, supporting projects and clients across Atlantic Canada and beyond. The successful candidate will function primarily in an advisory, technical leadership, and peer review capacity, influencing major project decisions, guiding engineering standards, and supporting complex problem-solving initiatives.

The successful candidate may be based in any Atlantic Canada office and will collaborate with regional and national teams on strategic energy infrastructure projects.

Your Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Advisory

  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert in rotating electrical machines (generators, motors, excitation systems) and power generation equipment.
  • Provide senior technical oversight, guidance, and peer review for:
    • Hydro, thermal, and combustion turbine generating stations
    • Generator auxiliaries and balance-of-plant electrical systems
    • Protection, control, and monitoring systems related to generation assets
  • Lead root cause analysis and troubleshooting for complex failures and performance issues in generators and associated systems.

Engineering Excellence & Governance

  • Establish, review, and maintain engineering standards, specifications, and best practices for power generation electrical systems.
  • Provide independent design reviews and technical assurance for major projects and critical equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and utility practices.

Project & Client Support

  • Act as a trusted technical adviser to clients, supporting studies, condition assessments, refurbishment strategies, and new generation projects.
  • Contribute to technical proposals, feasibility studies, and strategic planning initiatives.
  • Support project teams by resolving highly complex technical issues and identifying optimal engineering solutions.
  • Mentor power team members, providing guidance on complex technical matters.
  • Lead internal knowledge-sharing initiatives and contribute to capability development within the organization.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, vendors, and clients to ensure alignment on technical requirements.
  • Represent the organization in technical discussions, design reviews, and industry forums where appropriate.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Deep technical expertise in:
    • Rotating machines (large generators, motors, excitation systems)
    • Power generation electrical systems, including auxiliaries and balance of plant
    • Utility-scale generation across hydro, thermal, and combustion turbine technologies
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Protection and control systems (e.g., SEL or equivalent relays)
    • Power system analysis and modeling tools (e.g., ETAP or similar)
    • Medium and low voltage power distribution systems
  • Proven ability to:
    • Provide high-level technical leadership and advisory services
    • Conduct design reviews and engineering assurance
    • Solve complex, multidisciplinary technical problems
  • Excellent communication skills for client engagement and technical reporting
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (Master’s degree considered an asset)
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with a Canadian Engineering Association; eligible in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia
  • 20+ years of progressive experience in electrical engineering within power generation and utility environments
  • Demonstrated experience in a senior advisory, lead engineer, or SME role

The role requires working in a typical office environment with computers. Stantec offers a flexible work plan (i.e., hybrid model, working between the office and home).

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part‑time roles will be pro‑rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
