Senior Electrical Engineer – Canadian Mine Infrastructure

Location: Any AECOM Canadian office. Compensation: CAD 120,000 - 200,000 per year.

Job Overview

Lead electrical engineering solutions for mining operations, from early studies to construction. Mentor staff, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Canada and internationally, and support market expansion.

Key Responsibilities
Engineering Design and Support
  • Develop and optimize electrical systems for mining projects (power, control, instrumentation, communications).
  • Provide solutions for surface and underground electrical systems – mine power distribution, ventilation controls, materials handling, dewatering, pumping, and other facilities.
  • Design and specify electrical reticulation for surface/underground mines, high‑ and low‑voltage distribution, substations, and mobile equipment charging.
  • Prepare and review technical specifications, drawings, and functional descriptions for substations, switchgear, motor control centers.
  • Coordinate automation systems (PLCs, DCS, SCADA) for mining operations.
Project Delivery
  • Lead and manage electrical tasks throughout all project phases.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet client/regulatory requirements.
Client and Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Work closely with clients to understand operational needs and develop tailored engineering solutions.
  • Collaborate with internal mechanical, structural, and process engineering teams.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and progress updates.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships as a trusted advisor.
Operational Support
  • Provide technical support to troubleshoot and resolve electrical/control system issues.
  • Identify process improvements, cost savings, and efficiency enhancements.
  • Recommend maintenance strategies to improve equipment reliability.
Compliance and Safety
  • Ensure designs meet Canadian Electrical Code, provincial mining regulations, and other industry standards.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement safety measures.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in electrical engineering for underground mining.
  • Drive innovation by introducing new tools or methods to improve project outcomes.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
  • 8+ years of electrical engineering and design experience in heavy industrial multidisciplinary teams.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia or eligible for registration in British Columbia.
  • Experience designing and producing engineering documents (procurement packages, P&IDs, single‑line diagrams, control network diagrams, location drawings).
  • Familiar with Canadian Electrical Code and applicable industry standards (CSA, ANSI, ISA, IEEE, NFPA, IECEx).
  • Proficiency with eTAP, PTW, or equivalent power system modeling tools.
  • Experience in drafting and modeling software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks.
Preferred Skills
  • 15+ years of design experience including field services during construction.
  • Experience in designing standby generation, power factor correction, and high‑voltage transmission line systems.
