This position is based in Vancouver, with potential to be based at other major centers across Canada (Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, GTA, Montreal area, or Quebec City area).
The role of the Senior Electrical Distribution Engineer is to provide technical expertise for electrical distribution infrastructure (poles, wires, vaults, duct banks, and cable) in accordance with client standards, engineering principles, guidelines, policies, and safety standards.
Primary Responsibilities
- Support the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the distribution team, from responding to service requests to project delivery.
- Develop design work packages with scope, schedule and effort estimates.
- Resolve design and field engineering problems by conducting independent studies and analysis, exercising independent judgment in selecting and interpreting information, and recommending safe engineering designs to support successful operations and/or project completion.
- Deliver exceptional customer service by communicating with stakeholders and performing activities such as defining the scope of distribution engineering services, establishing basic design criteria with the client, approving technical documentation, and assessing and reporting on work progress against standards, objectives, and specifications to support safe, quality, on-time, and on-budget project completion.
- Provide specialized expertise in distribution and mentor, coach, and set high standards for work performance, influencing the establishment of standards, frameworks, and targets for junior team members.
- Exercise innovation to propose modifications to improve work processes, guidelines, instructions, procedures, and standards where possible.
- Design overhead line structures and associated facilities for voltages up to 35 kV in an electric utility environment (equipment supports/foundations, termination structures, manholes/vaults, duct banks).
Qualifications
- 10+ years of engineering experience with specific distribution knowledge, ideally within British Columbia.
- P.Eng designation or eligible to become a P.Eng with EGBC.
- Experience working with utilities in Western Canada.
- Expertise in overhead and underground electric distribution systems operating at voltages at or below 35 kV, and in the electrical, mechanical, civil, and operating requirements of components used to build such systems.
- Strong communication skills to articulate technical options and present solutions to diverse audiences.
- Familiarity with GIS, CAD systems, and drawing standards.
- Ability to use standard industry design/analysis software such as SPIDAcalc and PLS-CADD.
- Ability to work with remote partners and team members; maintain effective relationships with clients, staff, and other employees.
- Willingness to travel occasionally (mostly within Western Canada).
