Job description

Senior Distribution Designer/Engineer (Hybrid)

POWER Engineers, Inc. seeks a Senior Distribution Designer/Engineer in our Edmonton, Alberta, office.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Develop new designs by applying knowledge of electric utility systems and their operation.

  • Apply engineering calculations to various project challenges to develop complete and competent designs.

  • Prepare and check design deliverables, including plan and profile drawings, material selection, and construction specifications.

  • Prioritize work and manage multiple projects under budget and time constraints.

  • Manage and develop project estimates, schedules, bids, and engineering support.

  • Compile design packages for construction.

  • Perform quality reviews of project deliverables.

  • Network with clients and maintain client relationships.

  • Some travel will be required.

Required Education/Experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree or a Technology diploma in Civil or Electrical Engineering from a university accredited by Engineers Canada; additional engineering backgrounds will be considered.

  • Eight (8) + years of experience in the design and operation of overhead and underground distribution lines.

  • Experience in the design, operation, construction, and maintenance of overhead and underground distribution lines.

  • Exposure to utility standards, CSA, and an understanding of powerline construction techniques.

  • Ability to work in design teams and is self-motivated to perform assigned tasks and take the initiative to learn the position.

  • The ability to lead and direct a team of Engineers, Designers, and Drafters.

  • Experience using the Microsoft Office software suite.

  • Must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to travel to the USA on occasion for training or client meetings.

  • Must have a strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel.

  • Must be able to pass a client's background check along with client drug and alcohol screening processes as required.

Desired Education/Experience
  • Ten (10) + years of experience in the design and operation of overhead and underground distribution lines.

  • Prior utility design experience or distribution line work in the Alberta market is highly preferred.

  • Strong computer design skills, the ability to learn new software packages efficiently, and retain and apply on-the-job training.

  • Exposure to non-linear powerline design software such as PLS-CADD, SPIDAcalc, etc.

  • The candidate must have strong written and oral communication skills in the English language to communicate effectively with internal team members and external client personnel.

  • Managerial and leadership experience is an asset.
