Job description

Help shape the financial future of Western Canada's largest not-for-profit theatre company.

The Arts Club Theatre Company is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and forward-thinking Senior Director of Finance to join our senior leadership team.

This is an opportunity to play a significant role in the future of one of Canada's leading cultural organizations. Working closely with the Executive Director and Artistic Director, you will provide the financial insight, strategic advice, and sound judgment that help guide our artistic ambitions, operational decisions, and long-term sustainability.

We're looking for more than technical financial expertise. We want a trusted strategic partner who can anticipate opportunities and challenges, develop reliable financial forecasts, communicate complex financial information clearly, and bring the confidence and independent judgment to constructively challenge assumptions and decisions.

About the Arts Club

The Arts Club Theatre Company is Western Canada's largest not-for-profit theatre company and one of British Columbia's leading cultural organizations. With three Vancouver theatres—the Stanley BFL CANADA Stage, the Lindsay Family Stage at Granville Island, and the Olympic Village Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre,we produce and present a diverse range of professional theatre, alongside touring productions, education programs, and artist development initiatives.

Who Are We?

We are scrappy, ingenious trailblazers who create powerful, intimate artistic experiences that make you feel fully alive.

What Is Our Purpose?

To make our community come alive.

What Is Our Vision?

A world where vibrant communities are shaped by stories that inspire connection and vitality in us all.

Our Values
  • Determination: We have the drive to continue to move forward, with a respectful nod to our tenacious past and a fearless embrace of our future. It is through this forward momentum that we ensure we are the artistic leaders of our community.
  • Curiosity: We have a strong desire to know more; about ourselves, our art, and our patrons. This spirit is reflected in our willingness to make room for diversity of thought. This exploration of different viewpoints and ideas is reflected in our engagement with each other, with our art, our peers, and our community.
  • Creativity: We use our imaginations to explore our artistic practice and champion innovation in all the work that we do. We believe in the depth of our local talent and use our resources to showcase it.
  • Comradery: We interact with each other with good-fellowship and levity. Our spirit of generosity and warmth is seen in our empathy towards each other, our artists, our patrons, and our community. This allows us to embrace differences and makes us stronger.
  • Safety: The health and well-being of each other and our community informs our work and creates a safe, inviting, and inclusive space for all who enter and interact with us. We commit to constantly review our practices to ensure they are anti-racist and non-discriminatory. We are fiercely dedicated to being an organization that continually respects, champions, and uplifts underrepresented voices in all jobs.

We also strive to provide a safer work environment, both physically and mentally, and we have made ongoing commitments to inclusion, anti-racism and anti-oppression. We want the stories we work together to tell to have nuanced and varied perspectives.

With an annual operating budget of approximately $20 million and more than 500 artists, staff, and crew engaged each year, the Arts Club plays a significant role in British Columbia's cultural life.

As we advance our Growth & Impact Plan, strong financial leadership will be essential to supporting artistic excellence, organizational sustainability, and our ambitions for the future.

The Arts Club is grateful to create and share theatre on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional shared territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

The Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Executive Director and working in close partnership with both the Executive Director and Artistic Director, the Senior Director of Finance is the organization's senior financial executive and a key member of its leadership team.

You will lead financial planning, seasonal and organizational budgeting, forecasting, and financial management across the Arts Club's operations. You will also play a central role in financial governance, presenting financial statements and forecasts to the Board's Finance Committee and Board of Directors.

The position includes responsibility for financial reporting and administration of the independently governed Arts Club Theatre Foundation, which holds a permanent endowment of approximately $15 million.

Leading an experienced team of four finance professionals, you will ensure the integrity of our financial systems, reporting, and controls while providing the strategic insight needed to support confident decision-making.

What You'll Do
Provide strategic financial leadership
  • Serve as a trusted financial advisor to the Executive Director, Artistic Director, and senior leadership team.
  • Lead the annual seasonal budgeting process, working with artistic and operational colleagues to develop production budgets and financial plans.
  • Lead organizational budgeting, multi-year financial planning, and regular financial forecasting.
  • Anticipate financial risks and opportunities, providing candid, well-reasoned advice to support informed decisions.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, capital initiatives, and the implementation of our Growth & Impact Plan.
Ensure strong financial reporting and governance
  • Prepare and present financial statements, forecasts, and analysis to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Develop reliable forecasting processes that provide clear insight into financial performance and anticipated year-end results.
  • Oversee cash flow management, financial controls, banking, investments, and organizational risk management.
  • Lead the annual external audit and ensure compliance with accounting standards, charitable reporting, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead the management and annual renewal of the Arts Club's insurance programs, ensuring appropriate coverage for its facilities, productions, and operations.
Lead and collaborate
  • Lead, mentor, and support an experienced four-person finance team.
  • Build strong relationships across departments, helping colleagues understand financial information and make informed decisions.
  • Foster a culture of financial transparency, accountability, and sound stewardship.
  • Oversee payroll and financial administration functions.
Oversee Foundation financial reporting
  • Take responsibility for the financial reporting and administration of the Arts Club Theatre Foundation.
  • Prepare and present financial and investment reports to the Foundation Board.
  • Liaise with investment managers and support oversight of the Foundation's endowment, investment policies, and distributions.
Who We're Looking For

You're an experienced financial leader who combines technical expertise with strategic thinking, sound judgment, and strong interpersonal skills.

You understand that effective financial leadership is about more than numbers. You enjoy helping colleagues navigate complex decisions, anticipate challenges, and identify opportunities. You're comfortable offering candid advice, asking difficult questions, and constructively challenging assumptions while building trusted, collaborative relationships.

You bring:

  • A Canadian CPA designation.
  • Minimum 5 years of financial management experience, including senior leadership responsibility.
  • Demonstrated expertise in budgeting, financial forecasting, cash flow management, and financial reporting.
  • Experience leading a finance team and overseeing an annual external audit.
  • Experience presenting financial information to executive leadership, finance committees, and boards.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Independent judgment, a collaborative leadership style, and a commitment to financial accountability.
  • Senior financial leadership experience in a charitable or not-for-profit organization would be an asset, as would experience with charitable accounting, restricted funding, grant reporting, and board governance.
  • Experience with endowment funds, investment reporting, or foundation financial administration would also be an asset.
  • Familiarity with Sage 50, Payworks and/or payroll software, or CRM experience like Tessitura is welcome but not required.

Above all, we're looking for someone who will be a trusted partner to our leadership team and who shares our commitment to the Arts Club's mission and future.

  • Employee Benefit Plan: Extended Health Care, Dental Care, Life, AD&D & LTD Insurance.
  • Vacation time: 20 days per year.
