About the role

Canadian Blood Services is seeking a Regular Full-time Senior Development Assistant to join our dynamic Medical Affairs Innovation & Portfolio Management team.

Our Innovation and Portfolio Management team under the Medical Affairs and Innovation division is responsible for advancing transfusion and transplantation science and medicine by supporting a vast research and education network.

Reporting to our Senior Scientist you will be responsible for providing technical expertise in the design and execution of research and development projects as well as supporting the internal and external dissemination of project findings. In this role you will also contribute to the development and implementation of new laboratory assays and test methods oversee laboratory equipment supply and safety programs and mentor laboratory staff including trainees. You will work both independently and collaboratively with the microbiology team to support the successful achievement of project objectives.

Formula for success

  • Drawing on your skills in experimental design you will assist in the development of study objectives and designing experimental plans.
  • Applying your skills in laboratory techniques and instrumentation you will be executing studies generating and collecting data using a variety of laboratory equipment test instruments techniques and procedures.
  • Utilizing your skills in data analysis and troubleshooting you will be reviewing critically the data results and controls and troubleshooting as required.
  • Harnessing your expertise in statistical analysis you will support the dissemination of development project findings by performing or coordinating the statistical analysis of experimental data.
  • Demonstrating your proficiency in assay development you will support the development and implementation of new laboratory assays and test methods by preparing and / or supervising the execution of assay / method validation protocols as required.
  • Maintaining your commitment to laboratory operations you will oversee project execution laboratory equipment materials supply and safety programs by following Good Laboratory Practices Good Documentation Practices and Work Instructions.

Desired education and skill

  • Post-secondary school level education in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution preferably a Bachelor of Science degree or a Medical Laboratory Science background. An equivalent combination of education training and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum five years of related laboratory experience is desired.
  • Ability to work in a regulated environment.
  • Ability to work independently and with a diverse team.
  • Ability to work safely and efficiently in a laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of safe handling of biological and chemical hazards.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication in English including ability to write reports and manuscripts and make public presentations.
  • Experience with a variety of laboratory methodologies equipment and pipetting small volumes.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite programs and statistical analysis software.
  • Knowledge of blood product manufacturing methods and quality standards.
  • Ability to mentor and guide team members.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and develop creative solutions.
