The Opportunity
The Information Management & Technology (IMT) Branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Senior Data Modeler to shape the future of data modeling and semantic consistency across our organization. This high-level individual contributor role will be central to evolving our business information model and translating it into conceptual and logical data designs, ensuring seamless integration across systems, platforms, and analytical environments—including our cloud-based progressive data architecture.
In this role, you will lead the standardization and semantic alignment of data definitions across business units, guide the transformation of system-level data into enterprise-ready models, and support implementation in the analytics platform. This is a highly strategic and technically rigorous role that collaborates across business and technology domains, helping to ensure enterprise-wide consistency, data trust, and model integrity.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- Define and evolve the Enterprise Business Information Model in close partnership with business stakeholders, ensuring it reflects core business concepts, relationships, and semantics across domains.
- Translate the Business Information Model into conceptual and logical data models, enabling consistent, scalable design for transactional, operational, and analytics integration.
- Drive semantic alignment across business and technical teams, maintaining shared data definitions, taxonomies, and supporting the adoption of a unified enterprise vocabulary.
- Coordinate with the Data Architecture Practice Lead to embed modeling standards, naming conventions, and metadata practices into the enterprise data architecture framework.
- Collaborate with project Data Architects to ensure their solutions are aligned with enterprise data models; provide oversight and guidance to harmonize delivery with strategic design.
- Support Lakehouse data architecture implementation, ensuring logical models are translated into usable data structures across ingestion (raw), curation (trusted), and consumption (refined) layers, collaborating with data engineers and architects to translate logical models into analytics data architecture implementations (Data Lakehouse using Databricks).
- Serve as a subject matter expert on data modeling practices, mentoring architects and analysts, and contributing to the continuous improvement of modeling methodologies, tools, and processes.
- Contribute to architecture governance, participating in design reviews and modeling forums to ensure solutions remain compliant with enterprise data principles.
What we’re looking for in you:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
- 7–10 years of progressive experience in enterprise data modeling, including leading organization-wide conceptual and logical model development initiatives.
- Proven ability to define and evolve business information models by working directly with domain experts, ensuring alignment between business semantics and enterprise data design.
- Expertise in enterprise modeling tools such as ER/Studio, Microsoft Visio, or equivalent, with a strong track record of producing clear, reusable data models for both strategic planning and delivery enablement.
- Experience applying data modeling practices within complex, regulated environments—preferably in the energy, oil and gas, or government sector—where data consistency, lineage, and governance are critical.
- Demonstrated leadership in establishing and promoting enterprise modeling standards, including naming conventions, metadata structure, and semantic consistency, in collaboration with data architecture and governance teams.
- Strong communicator and facilitator with the ability to influence senior stakeholders, bridge gaps between business and technical teams, and mentor others in modeling best practices.
