Senior Data Modeler – Azure & Databricks
Hybrid contract opportunity in the insurance industry for a skilled data modeler with strong experience in information architecture, data strategy, and Azure solutions. Work with investment data in a collaborative, enterprise-level environment supporting a global data strategy.
What is in it for you:
• Salaried: $75-85 per hour.
• Incorporated Business Rate: $90-100 per hour.
• 6-month contract.
• Full-time position: 37.50 hours per week.
• Weekday schedule from 9 am to 5 pm.
• Hybrid work: in-office Tuesday to Thursday.
Responsibilities:
• Understand and translate complex business needs into scalable and long-term data models.
• Collaborate closely with business partners, stakeholders, functional experts, business analysts, contractors, and developers to gather and analyze system requirements.
• Architect, design, and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models using industry best practices.
• Work with Application Development teams to implement data strategies, build data flows, and support solution delivery.
• Develop and maintain metadata repositories and document data lineage to ensure transparency and traceability.
• Ensure data model quality, consistency, and performance by optimizing models to reduce redundancy and improve accuracy.
• Reverse-engineer physical data models from existing databases and SQL scripts.
• Evaluate data models and physical databases for discrepancies and recommend improvements.
• Apply and enforce standardized naming conventions, coding practices, and modeling guidelines.
• Recommend opportunities for reuse and standardization of existing data models across projects.
• Identify and address data-related system integration challenges, proposing viable technical solutions.
• Define and maintain clear data definitions for all data tables.
• Validate business data objects for accuracy and completeness.
• Communicate model constraints, interdependencies, and limitations clearly to data engineers, technical teams, and business stakeholders.
• Provide guidance and support to system analysts, developers, and other project team members regarding data model usage and constraints.
• Ensure understanding and application of OLAP, reporting, and analytics principles in model design.
• Take full ownership of data modeling activities, performing hands-on work with accountability for results.
What you will need to succeed:
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field.
• 5 to 8 years of experience in IT, with at least 4 years specifically in data model design.
• Strong data modeling and data analysis skills, with the ability to take ownership and perform hands-on modeling work.
• Proficiency in relational database systems (RDBMS).
• Experience working in big data environments.
• Expertise in big data technologies and Databricks.
• Solid experience with business intelligence and data warehousing development technologies.
• Experience with Azure data solutions and SQL.
• Expertise with PowerDesigner or Erwin Data Modeling tools.
• Ability to reverse-engineer physical data models from databases and scripts.
• Familiarity with capital markets and investment data.
• Understanding of OLAP, reporting, and analytics principles.
• Clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Strong work ethic with a focus on results, accuracy, and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently, navigate ambiguity, and proactively solve problems.
Nice-to-Have:
• Knowledge of the wealth management and/or capital markets industry.
• Experience with the Hortonworks/Cloudera Hadoop platform.
